Re: Philips SL25 fluorescent light
Hi Tom, I have one still in use in my shed, I bought it new in 1984 when they first appeared in my local lighting shop.

Re: Philips SL25 fluorescent light
This is one of the new-type 'compact fluorescent lamps' which are, seemingly, going to make the ordinary light-bulb obsolete.
Let's hope it doesn't catch on. It looks like an environmental disaster to me. |

Re: Philips SL25 fluorescent light
1984 sounds about right to me, too. I bought one for my parents, I think just before I went to Uni, which was later in 1984. They hated it!

Re: Philips SL25 fluorescent light
Lamptech.co.uk have online a Philips Lighting catalogue from 1989/90 which still includes this exact style of lamp - SL9, 13, 18 and 25, equivalent to incandescent lamps of 40, 60, 75 and 100W respectively. I'm pretty sure the charcoal-based versions preceded these with white bases.

Re: Philips SL25 fluorescent light
The Philips SL retrofit lamps first appeared in the UK, in about 1982/83.
Original ones had a dark green / charcoal base which then changed to white base in about 1985/86. By about 1987, the white base remained, but the whole assembly became slightly narrower, with more of a sweeping taper towards the lamp cap, compared to the early wider type. Yours seems to be the narrower type. By about 1990, the lamps changed completely to the stick type, and lost their outer glass housing. Yours would date from about 1987-1990. I was in the trade at the time, and remember the changes quite well. They were expensive lamps when first introduced - not far off £10 each. They were Philips competitor to the Thorn 2D lamp - and started the move to retrofit compact fluorescent lamps - and set the scene for the demise of the incandescent GLS filament lamp. |
