Second thoughts about the metal sub-frame. Without it the chassis is somewhat flexible which could impose too much strain on the neck of the CRT when the chassis lifted off the bench prior to reinstallation in the cabinet.
The same rule applies when the chassis is removed from the cabinet for servicing.
The right angle at the front of the sub-frame will be cut off. See attachment.
Doing this will make the underside of the frame completely flat which will allow the chassis to be slid in and out the cabinet more easily. Countersunk screws will be used to attach the frame to the chassis.

The right angle front edge of the chassis frame has been cut off and repainted in BMW Mini Old English White.

Hi.
Well the HMV 2807 is now complete with a nice bright tube ready to watch Her Majesty and the televised Christmas message at 3pm on the 25th of December. All being well I'll give the set pride of place in the living room and record the video for posterity.

I'm still unsure what prize you are putting up Bob?
Perhaps an unstuffed 0.1uf cap from a DAC90A or a restuffed one as a super duper prize
Or perhaps you'll go to the winner and sing Christmas Carols?
Anyway it's just a bit of fun to cheer up the long nights and dull days.

Hi Trevor how's about a UL44 valve for a 405 line TV or a output valve for a DAC90A conversion

Hi Bob.
Now that's a decent prize, far too much in my eyes.
A prize like that should take pride of place on the mantlepiece.

Switched on the 24" KB this afternoon. The performance of the set has deteriorated considerably since it was on test last month. Main problem is lack of width. At 225volts the HT voltage is slightly higher than normal, the last time the HT was measured it was 208volts. Searched the workshop for a replacement 50CD6G line output valve but couldn't find one. The 6.3volt version, 6CD6G, got plenty of those.
Fortunately, I found a NOS valve in the shed.
Let's find out if the line output valve is faulty.

The 50CD6G was faulty, gone low emission, but unfortunately the replacement valve has issues. After warming up there was flashover inside the bulb which which soon disappeared. Also, there is what appears to be self oscillation going on in the valve causing ragged verticals.
The best plan will be to replace the 50CD6G with a PL36 or Mazda 30P19.
An 83ohm resistor will have to be inserted in the heater chain to compensate for the 25volt heater in the PL36. 75ohms will be the nearest preferred value.

Bob's prize should go to whoever watches the broadcast on a 1957 vintage set, the year she delivered the first televised Christmas speech.

That'll be easy for me then!
Three sets here one 56, 57 & 58 all in good working order.
Think I'll stick with the 2807 though as it would most likely survived to 1957 as would many earlier manufactured sets.

The KB PV100 "Regina" was made in 1958.
The replacement 50CD6G seems to have settled down. Picture is rock steady.
Picture width can be increased by changing the value of C60 to 180pF.
The slight reduction of EHT can be tolerated.

Yesterday I attempted to reinstall the chassis into the cabinet. No matter how much force was applied the CRT faceplate wouldn't pass through the mask aperture.
Strange that the chassis was easy to remove but now it's impossible to reverse the procedure.
Some action was needed to enlarge the screen aperture. An easy solution to the problem, just use a hammer to flatten the edges of the mask aperture.
Now the CRT faceplate passes through the mask without any difficulty.
But there is still problems positioning the CRT on the chassis. The tube is pushed back as far as possible, any further and the cone part of the tube will be too close to various parts on the chassis.
Also, there is still that corner shadow at the right side of the picture. It's possible a fault exists in the scanning coils. A similar fault condition in the Pye LV20 was discussed some time ago. It was found that the iron core in the scan coils had acquired magnetic properties. Perhaps there is the possibility of a DC component in the scanning waveform?
Another CRT installation fault, the faceplate of the CRT is in contact with the front safety window. By some means or other the CRT has to be pushed back further into the cabinet.
Shown in the foreground of the second attachment is the special chassis installation table. Without this item removal and installation of the chassis would have been a very difficult a task.

Hi Bob,
The picture quality is excellent and far better than I'd would have ever expected from such a large screen TV operating on 405 lines.
For fhe flyback tuning capacitor C60 I've settled on a value of 180pF as this gives the best compromise between picture width and EHT voltage. The EHT is now 15.5KV when displaying a well contrasted picture and rises to 17KV at zero brightness.
But no luck with eliminating that corner shadow at the right side of the picture.

The big KB is in terms of picture quality is still giving a good account of itself.
Just hope it's OK tomorrow.

I know nothing about old TVs, except that I was impressed by the clarity when Freya showed me what a modern signal looks like displayed on one. However, I've very much enjoyed this thread, and hope HM looks great this afternoon. Don't forget the photographic evidence!

Hi.
Just tested the 2807 and the camera location and all so far is good to go.
I'll report back after the speech if all has gone to plan.
The TV is in the back bedroom where it's set up, both of us will watch Her Majesty there.

I might go fire up the Murphy V180C in a bit although it won’t be for the live Queens speech, I’ll be watching that one on the Sony flat thing in the living room…

Lloyd
