Default Decca FFSS tonearm - mystery wire!

I am re-wiring an old FFSS tonearm and, checking continuity revealed that the yellow wire does nowt - red and green (why not?) are right and left. Pulling back the fabric reveals that it is present at the output end, but folded back untrimmed at the cartridge end. Is there a story behind this curious behaviour?

Hopefully, the attachment below should explain all !
(I had to 'zip' the two files as the forum software made the files very hard to read..)

Edit : maybe not, as the yellow wire should be connected when using a Decca cartridge.

Regards,
Andy

Thank you gents - that explains it. The wiring is potentially set up for mono or stereo operation.

But it begs the question - if I were to fit a mono version of the cartridge - with the lateral wire not connected - what would I get? I am referring to GP49000's post.

Excerpt - 'For stereophonic reproduction, connections are normally made to the L.H. Channel, Screen (common) and R.H. Channel. No connection is made to the Lateral Coil for stereo, though for single channel MONO, connections can be made to the Lateral Coil and Screen ONLY.'

I am unsure myself, I am not really familiar with the lateral coil cartridge connection.
