Re: HMV 900 TV restoration.
Brilliant Progress David, I am sure it will be all sorted (Cabinet Wise) in two weeks.
Progress is slow here I am afraid as I am awaiting the return of the EHT transformer. The engineering shop has supplied me with a new CRT unit cover and some small brackets for the chassis, I also have as far as I can tell have a full list of what I need to complete the RF & sync sections. So once I have the EHT transformer back it will be full steam ahead.

Re: HMV 900 TV restoration.
Before I do anymore work on this cabinet something must be done about the right side cabinet front and the side panel joint. The first picture shows the gap between the two sections.
By using adjustable cramps the gap has been closed and now the cabinet is a much stiffer structure. The next stage is to apply more veneers. DFWB. |

Re: HMV 900 TV restoration.
That is looking good, i thought it may be a problem getting it back together as waterlogged sprung apart joints often dont want to go back as they were, usully due to ingress of muck hardened glue etc but that looks brilliant well done David.
I will try and get down to see you this week. Mike |

If those sah cramps didn't get it back into shape nothing would!
Thanks for the update and education. - Joe |

Re: HMV 900 TV restoration.
Hi PillenWerfer,
I've used those sash cramps on many occaisions to repair and assemble TV cabinets. They certainly make tight joints. Today, I applied new veneer on the front right side of the cabinet. I found a piece of veneer which is a good match of the other side. DFWB. |

I don't often comment on things here as my knowledge base is a basic level only and therefore prefer to just digest what is said...however I would be very interested David to see how you put your excellent skills to work on the vaneer problems that this cabinet presents. Where to obtain matching vaneer, matching up with what is there and just how you do it. If you would be prepared to share that I would be very grateful and it would be very interesting. Have to say that the transformation so far is simply amazing.

Re: HMV 900 TV restoration.
Work continues on the HMV cabinet. I've come to the tricky stage of the restoration, that is inserting pieces of veneer into the top front of the cabinet. There is no chance that the replacement veneers will match the original so the wood grain will have to be painted on.
The third picture shows that I have been lucky to salvage a piece of the original veneer for the front upper right panel of the cabinet. The wood grain effect can be copied for the left panel. The dark veneer at the bottom front of the cabinet has been tidied up, new veneer pieces inserted where necessary. DFWB. |

Re: HMV 900 TV restoration.
Hi David.
You are doing great, what a transformation! You must have the patience of a saint. I certainly cannot wait till I see the finished article. The chassis work has come on nicely with most resistors now done that were wrong, the caps have also been done in the "sync" sections. The dampness though has caused havoc with the mica caps in the TRF sections.

Re: HMV 900 TV restoration.
WOW! Trevor's right about the patience of a saint. Seeing how the set is coming together is fantastic and having been put off by the state of it at the NVCF, I now wonder whether I was stupid not appreciating what could be done - hindsight is a wonderful thing! I'm looking forward to more, David.

Re: HMV 900 TV restoration.
Hi Trevor and Brian,
I think I'm on the home straight now (to use a horse racing term). Sure there is a number of tasks to do on the cabinet but another week should see the job done. DFWB. |

Hi David, fantastic work. I would be interested to know what you will use to paint the grain on?

Re: HMV 900 TV restoration.
Hi PJL,
In the past I've used modelling paints to create the wood grain effect. Usual colours being brown and black. As has been mentioned before it's the background wood dye that is the difficult part. Might have a go at the job this weekend. DFWB. |

Re: HMV 900 TV restoration.
Hi.
I received the EHT Transformer back from Mike Barker yesterday and what a beautiful job it is, a total work of art. I also have David Boynes here for the weekend (he came last evening) then I start my new job on Monday so progress is likely to be slow, I am off on Thursday/Friday so may get some time then although the usual things will need to be done! I will keep in touch though.

Re: HMV 900 TV restoration.
I've not been able to do much work this week. Just that Premier radio set, the job is nearly done.
However, today, I managed to do some work on the HMV 900. My attention has been centred on the front panel. A fake wood grain effect has been created for the right side of the front. I think it looks quite convincing. When I'm satisfied with the artwork it will photographed in mirror form and then I'll be able to create a similar effect for the left panel. DFWB. |

Re: HMV 900 TV restoration.
That's very good.
Will you just use the mirrored photo as a guide to do the other side freehand, or do you have an 'easier' method? |
