Default Valuations of our sets.

I noticed when renewing the house insurance recently that all household items, even collectables, are covered so long as each item is below £1,000 in value. Items over that value have to have their value stated.

This got me wondering how exactly we go about this with our early TV sets (and I suppose some early radios too).

I have no interests whatsoever in the commercial value of my collection for the reason of selling it, but now that this issue has arisen it does make you think that perhaps you need to know the value of the early and/or rare items in your collection so that you can properly go about insuring them.

Can anyone suggest where you can find the value of the sets in your collection? I suspect this may well effect many of us on the forum, especially when considering these items when they are restored and in full working order.

All the best,

Peter.

If you have a valuable collection you may want to consider a "Fine Arts" type of policy. These can cover your house, contents and collectables and recognise the special nature of collections. They can also give cover for your business assets if you work from home. You may not think of yourself as an art collector but these companies may have the right product for you.

My insurance is with specialist brokers RK Harrison (www.rkharrison.com) using their Classic Insurance for Town and Country Residences. I'm not specifically recommending them to you - they may or may not be right for your particular circumstances - but at least they won't treat you as a series of boxes to be ticked and can bend various parts of the policy to suit your particular needs. They may well be no more expensive than a normal household policy.

I have no association with this company nor do I get any reward for recommending them. I have only been with them for a year and (thank goodness) I have no idea how well they handle claims.

Thanks for the advice here. I think with my collection the bottom line is that I don't really know what its commercial value is. I can easily list all of the radio and TV sets, but as to their value, I really don't know. I would imagine when they are restored they are more valuable than unrestored, but how do you find out the true value of each set?

It's only really important if an individual set is worth £1,000 or more, but, to be totally honest, in my case I have no idea whether I have any sets of that kind of value, or, put another way, if it would cost me more than £1,000 to replace any certain set/s should they be stolen or damaged.

I'll have a look at the website you have given, thanks for that. I'd be interested to know how others feel about this and also how they have addressed the issue.

All the best,

Peter.

A guide to values can be found here

http://www.radiocraft.co.uk/values.htm

This was updated in July of this year so it quite a recent reflection of current prices. These prices are what you would expect privately, auction prices could be more or less depending on level of interest etc.

Thanks for this information. My interest here is for insurance cover, and so this looks to be very useful.

Thanks for the help.
