Default Philips 1718U awakened

Hi Folks,

I thought I'd share my first success at a 405 line only telly.

This Philips 1718U was acquired earlier this year for about 20 quid. Electrically it appears identical to the 1708U, the service info for which can be found on the excellent vintage tv service data CD.

It arrived lifeless with the mains switch o/c on one pole, and the 1st IF valve V6 sporting an o/c heater. A new EF80 and (temporary, honest) wire link later and up it came; albeit with severe lack of height and the output from the aurora - (fabulous piece of kit) -appearing on the wrong channel.
Then, while I was perusing the diagram, it said BANG! You guessed it, the mains filter cap had decided to exit stage left.
5 of the capacitors in the frame circuit were passing DC and replacements restored the height and linearity. The resulting pic is bright and stable, and I have to say I'm rather impressed with it!

It didn't have a front end fault after all - the channel selector had been fitted 180 degs out.
I haven't done anything yet with the cabinet which needs some attention.
I feel further inspired to tackle the GEC set that's lying in wait under the bench now!

Sorry for the 'hum bar' on the attached pic, my camera really struggles when it's looking at a crt
Regards
Stu

Hi, These tubes seem to last forever. I remember they had Mullard Radiant Screen printed on the label. It looks like a very nice set you have Cheers, Malc.

That looks really good. The linearity and positioning etc are spot on too.

Hello,
I think this uses the same super chassis as the Philips 1768 model. It has the inverted line output transformer with the large plug and socket.

AW43/53-80's and the later 110 Degree AW43/53-88's do last for ever!
They were about the best domestic television tubes. J.

Hi Again,

Thanks for the nice comments chaps I'm really pleased with the set. Since my luck was appearing to be in I decided to return my attention to the older GEC set thats also languishing here, but its prospects don't appear as bright, I'll start another thread for that little saga....

Thanks again

Stu
