Another 'spot the telly' challenge...
Moving pictures for a change, so you'll have to be quick (although you can pause the footage). We're at an outdoor jumble sale in Hucknall, Nottinghamshire in 1960.....
http://www.macearchive.org/Archive/T...ntry/4086.html Extra points for identifying the radio too. I wonder how much they went for... Steve J |

Looks a similar shape to a Bush TV2 - but I don't think it is.

Re: Another 'spot the telly' challenge...
It looks to also have a radio built in, I would take a guess at late 40s from a small manufacturer, possibly built by Plessey?

Re: Another 'spot the telly' challenge...
That took me back to the Jumble sales of my youth! FANTASTIC! I didn't recognize either of those consoles but must date from the start of the Sutton Coldfield transmitter.
The second one has a brand logo but the conrol layout is strange. The Defiant would have employed one of the very reliable Plessey chassis mentioned by Mark. Note the terrific changes from 1949 to 1959, only ten years but we had printed circuits, 110 degree tubes, 13 channels, VHF radio 110 degree scanning, 625/UHF and colour on the horizon. Really shows a sign of the times in 1960. Those old 'DEAN' wash boilers would have been scrapped due to the introduction of a washing machine, maybe a 'ROLLS RAPIDE' thus reducing the drudgery of washday for the women of the household. Regards, John. |

Yep, most certainly a Defiant as you say Greg. I owned the 1250 table model a few years ago and although I didn't check, my first impression was that the console shown had a similar look to it. Oh for a time machine.... Incidentally there are tons more evocative clips on the website, mostly shot by ATV Midlands. The majority of the items are mute, with commentary being added later for use in the evening news bulletins. It's amazing they have survived. No idea what telly that console was but what a great bit of atmospheric footage though.

Re: Another 'spot the telly' challenge...
Interesting that technology in those days depreciated just like it does today, as it becomes out dated. That TV was probably only 7-10 years old and would have cost a few bob when new! Now sitting outside at an jumble sale! Don't know what the radio is but looks mid/late 30's by design.

Great bit of footage. Love the regiment of upright pianos!

Great piece of film, I agree the television is a Defiant and I know the radio next to it is a Philips because years ago I had one.
