The set looks pretty good so far. Just wants the top linearity doing. Tube looks a bit dim, but that could bee the camera. Run it for a bit and it'll soon come up if it is low.

Cheers,

Steve P.

Hello Des,
Looks pretty good. The tube should be OK. I have never replaced a Mullard AW43-88, they are a great tube. The actual picture shape will not be as it would on a conventional tube of the period say the AW43-80 90degree. The makers were a bit concerned at the time of the flat construction of the 110 degree tube bulb and made the corners rather rounded to reduce stress. Its only a technical point and the pictures produced were excellent. This was overcome to a large degree when the AW47-90 19" tube was introduced in 1961.
Regarding your sound fault. If the audio amp is working ok [input to PCL82 triode section] it might be an idea to check the condition of the sound detector diode mounted in the final sound i.f. transformer. Its W4 inside L48/49 can. I have found several of these O/C in vintage sets giving no sound, or no vision if used as vision detectors. Must be an age thing as they very rarely failed when in normal service. Just a point but you can do a lot of head scratching with this one. Regards, John.

Hi, The problem I had yesterday with the sound was caused by nothing more than the sound output valve being poorly seated in its holder, now ok. I'm pleased with the set and the Aurora. Thanks again to everyone for their help.
Cheers, Des.

Your very welcome DES. I think we all enjoyed this one by its following. Nice to know it came to a good conclusion. 'BBC television will now be closing for this evening. Good night everyone, Good night, and just a reminder to switch off your sets..' J.

Hi Des.

Glad to see it turned out so well. I guess you can add working pictures to your website now. Smashing pictures although quite sad to see stills of "On the Buses" seeing as Reg Varney (Stan Butler) died today

Good luck on your next restoration.

Best wishes,

Thanks, Here's a few more pics. My camera isn't doing the set justice.
Cheers, Des.

Very stylish Des, a familiar setting to any 60's television engineer.

A perfect step back in time (though hide the CD's next time)

Best wishes,

Very nice indeed, especially the period setting.

(And Helen says "How much do you want for the cat?")
