Default Pye V17 Pictures

Hi to all,

Thought I would post a few pics of the Pye V17 I have just finished restoring. What a rats nest of wires & parts on her chassis!!!!!

I bought it a few years ago at an auction in Diss, Norfolk (big collection from one chap went under the hammer about 5 years ago) and its been sitting around the workshop screaming to be restored. So I thought I would bring her back to life.
I was so impressed by the picture quality of this 1953 beast that I thought some of you guys would like to see her back to her former glory. The pic quality is not the best(sorry for the 'lines') they were taken with a mobile phone camera. I will post some higher def pics if anyone is interested.

Cheers
Rob

Ps. The Cricket pic is from a dvd recorded from sky a few years ago.

What a cracker Rob. Is it a VT17 [front drops down] or a V7/VT7? The 17" versions of these are quite rare. Once again a receiver 55 years old shows us just how good 405 line television was. No wonder engineers came from all over the World to see how we did it! Well done! Regards, John.

I always liked that series.
Although they had problems (didnt everything of that era!) they worked well and gave a good picture.

Hi John.
You are right, its the non tuner one,V7.

When i first got the set I thought it was a V4. When the set had been serviced in the past someone must have changed the metal can that covers the LOPT with one from another set because it said Pye V4. Not knowing that the 4 & 7 stood for the screen size at the time i assumed it was a V4.

With regards to the story of the restoration, here is one bit of fun to be getting on with.
For thoses of you that have had the plesure of servicing these beasts you will know there are a few of those horrid M3 selenium diodes in the circuit. All of which had failed!
Even the NOS M3's I had were naff! So for a giggle I replaced them with red LEDs! The set worked so well with these in the circuit that I have left them in as permenant replacements! Its looks strange to see these little LEDs glowing underneath the chassis!!

Thanks for the comments chaps.

Who needs 1200 odd HD lines when you can get a pic like that with 405!!

Cheers again
Rob

OOOOH I like the sound of those LED's. The original M3's were just one or two selenium discs pressed into an aluminium case with just 'pressure contact.' Nasty but fortunately we have the 1N4001 to 4006 if you dont like the spooky glow....Thanks for posting Rob, it gives everyone encouragement! John.

Well done with that set. It would be fun to put the 9", 14" and 17" models side by side

The LED trick reminds me of an engineer who routinely used red and green LEDs as voltage droppers in low power circuits. Not terribly accurate but often good enough. You also got a pilot light for free.

This one the first TVs I cut my teeth on back in the early 60s and your impressions bring back exactly the memories I have. Great picture but the chassis looked horrible underneath.

I have worked on many V4/VT4s in fact we use to sell them when I worked in London but I don't ever recall seeing a V7. You learn something every day - or perhaps every 50 years.

Hi.
Nice work and a nice set. I too have never come across a V7. I take it the line stage has a higher EHT as the V4 can struggle on high brightness pictures.
Cheers.

Hi all.

Yes I think the EHT is a bit higher(she was the first set in god knows how many ive done to give me a packet!! Naughty girl!!), mind you it still struggles a little with really bright pics.
I didnt realise that these sets are that rare, (the data is in the little red books).
I broke up the 17" console version just before xmas last year.

I feel bad now. Mind you the cabinet was poor and the tube was really good. The CRT is now in a friends 17" Bush.

Cheers for all the comments chaps.
