Default Philco Model 60 Record Player, Rectifier Replacement

Hi All

First post here, thanks for the membership and all the great info on this site!

I recently acquired a nice Philco Model 60 record player, in its good condition and I have been slowly cleaning it up and checking the components. First off I'll start by saying I am very aware of the safety protocols when working on valve equipment being a licensed ham radio operator with a passion for valve transceivers. The player works well, I just need to replace the stylus as it looks very old and them I'll use it to play a large collection of 78's my mother left me.

I want to replace the metal rectifier noted as a C2D on the schematic but I am having a hard time finding it in the player its pretty tight in there, if anyone can help I would be grateful. Also I have load of 1N4008 diodes in my spares box and wondered if anyone can tell me if these are a suitable replacement with say a 150-200 ohm resistor in series?

Thanks and appreciate any advice!

I can't tell you how to find the rectifier, but it should be easy enough. It's probably bolted to the chassis somewhere. A 1N4008 and resistor should be fine - the resistor value isn't critical.

You should find the the diode/resistor arrangement quite satisafctory as there is little chance in finding a Contact Cooled direct replacement nowadays. The Service Sheet for the Model 60 can be downloaded from the "Service Data" link top RHS. Philco record players from this period always had an excellent bass response, noticeably better than their peers.

Looks like you could conveniently hide your 4008 inside the emptied out rectifier case.

R8 could be conveniently replaced by whatever value 6W W/W resistor gives the correct 240V HT when the set's warmed up.

Guys that is super helpful, I have now found it in my player. Final newbie question before I dive in, I presume that the 1N4007 is installed with the anode to the dropper resistor and the cathode to the red wire shown in the picture?
