Default Belling cooker @1950s hot plate

I have an old 1950's wooden holiday cabin complete with a Belling electric cooker which is still in use. Unfortunately one of the rings has stopped working. I have looked inside and found the dreaded asbestos coated wiring. Wondering if I can replace the ring or if there might be something else like a thermostat or regulator gone? Or if there is someone out there who is refurbishing old cookers? The plate is 8 inches in diameter and unusually is solid metal (suppose there is an element inside). Any suggestions?

Looks like the No.53 Big Baby Belling. If it's original I don't think the round plate will involve thermostatic control, just low/medium/high switching in different parts of the element. Such hotplates had been standard at least since the early '30s and were slowly displaced by radiant rings in the '50s, at first just on higher-end cookers. You may find under the hob that the plate plugs into a socket arrangement with probably a couple of large screws securing it in place - it's a while since I looked inside one of these - and the underside of the round plate may be an open wire spiral element set in fireclay. Sometimes they can be repaired, otherwise it's a case of trying to track down a compatible replacement.

The complete version of the 'Radio, Television and Electrical Repairs' book (not the extract available on the DVD from this site) includes a section on ripping the old element out of such a hotplate, cleaning up the casting, and puting a new element back in fireclay cement.

Before going any further I think the OP needs to test the element for continuity.

Thanks everyone for comments. I have taken the plate off to test for continuity. The element is inside a steel casing. There is some rust powder coming out of it. At the moment I can't open the case to look at the element because the bolt is rusted. There are four wires plus the earth coming from it to the cooker. Not sure which wires to use for a continuity test?

Check for continuity between all four connections.

Often if just one section of the element goes open circuit it'll still work on some heat settings.

Not getting any continuity Have ordered a copy of "Radio Television and Electrical Repairs" to look at how to replace the element. I'm wondering if any more modern elements would work in its place?

Odd that there's no continuity at all.

If you have one of those shops which sells domestic appliance spares near you they may be able to advise a suitable replacement.

If you feel it's safe to do so you may wish to check that 230VAC appears on the wires going to the element at various switch settings.

Various Belling elements on this site. For example:-
