Default Original Old Advertisement

While driving in Southampton the other day I got held up by some red lights just off Cobden Bridge and spotted this sign, so I took a picture with my phone.

I wonder how many other orginal advertisements there are around the country that have survived?

Dunno. But glad this one has!

It's curious, too, as it appears to be on a concrete-rendered wall - which usually indicates that an adjoining property has been sliced off. But this must have been a long time ago, else the Ekco advert would never have been applied.

Do you know anything of the history of this road?

A lot of these painted on adverts survive, but I've not seen a radio related one before.

I got rather lost in Hackney about five years ago. I looked up and above the door on a long derelict shop was a very ancient sign advertising Kolster Brands!

There's a huge one on the side of a gas showroom as your coming up Radford Road in Coventry advertising Ferguson TV, video and hi-fi. I would imagine it's from the late 70's.

I will take a picture next time I go past

Thanks for the link Nick, very interesting! Seems they still have a hole in the ground where they demolished the building 11 years ago....

I hope it doesn't get obscured by whatever is going to be built on the adjoining site.

Such ads and signs are generally known in the Urbex community as 'Ghost Ads', I myself spend a lot of time hunting for them to photograph. If its OK with the OP, I would like to borrow that photo to add to the long running thread of such ads on the Derelict Places Urbex website?

Heres a link to the thread - http://www.derelictplaces.co.uk/main...ead.php?t=7663

It's a pity we couldn't get a preservation order on them or sealing it with a Perspex cover for our future generations. I am after a Bush sign myself or a scan of one for my shed.

I suspect the adjoining building was a blitz casualty, and the Ekco ad dates from the late 40s. It's surprising that a bombsite has taken 70 years to be redeveloped, but it does happen. Southampton got quite a pasting in WW2.

If I was at end of a row of houses I would fancy painting one.

Thanks Peter,

I tried it with a simple link to your picture location above, and that worked just fine.

I think that's the first radio related ad on the DP Ghost Ads thread. Ads for grocers and the co-op are the commonest it seems

Hi.

Near Balham station in South London there is a sign on the front (to ) of one of the buildings that says "Ekco Television" (or at least that is what I think it says).
But I don't think it is a painted sign.
