Same here! I had quite a number of cobbled together amps, line drive units etc that cut a lot of time in a busy service dept. I have never seen an ELC1043 in a G8. I must have serviced hundreds of them but I cannot recall a low gain/grain fault. John.

It's got to be worth opening the tuner and looking closely at the earthing connections. You've nothing to lose. I can't remember having a low gain fault on a G8; most tuning problems were due to the tip switches. Do check it sweeps through the band (3-30v on the tuning pin). If all else fails you probably could use a 1043 as a lash up while you find a 'real' tuner.
Lovely TV - I used to find the paler the cabinet, the better the set. No idea why - possibly the colour used to darken the more it was used, or else a pale cabinet denoted a late set.

Absolutely! One of the most common problems was dry earth connections to various points....easily seen by cracks around the solder. Admittedly this was more of a problem with the ELC1043 (fixed a good many of those in the field) but no harm checking the G8 tuner for similar problems.

The late 550s had a textured finish to the black plastic surround, on earlier sets it was smooth plastic. (not the front, the edges) Once I spotted that I applied it when buying ex rental ones. A local shop was disposing of them purely on age when they came back from customers. The late sets could be a few years newer than the early 550s and were usually mint and working.
The earlier sets were getting on for 10 years old by then the newer ones could be almost half that and the price was the same regardless so it was worth being picky...

Research and memory indicate that late model G8's including the G22K550 fitted with a combined tuner/i.f./decoder panel used the Philips U6 tuner.
Never known one fail, personally, although of course that doesn't imply any didn't.
They were certainly an awful lot more reliable than the infamous ELC1043.

As an aside, if you have the facility to power the set using a suitably rated mains isolation transformer, it might be worthwhile eliminating possible issues with the aerial isolator by connecting the aerial direct to the tuner thus bypassing it.

Of course, it goes without saying that one should NEVER do this with the set connected to raw mains!

Some of the 550 series had a wooden veneer around the screen and controls that soon loked tatty and dated. Carefully peeling it off revealed the textured finish referred to in post #26. The TV looked like new when the glue was removed!
