Default Philips KT3

Hello,

I have just fished a 1979 Philips KT3 16" portable from a skip, the set works and has a nice picture, but the programme selector keypad/display is faulty, some of the buttons are selecting a wrong programme, for example, if i push 2 i get 5 , but if i push 5 i get 5 correctly...

i have already tried to swap the ICs on the front control panel assembly and on the customer control board (which is still based on potentiometers) and also checked the entire set for dry joints, but the fault is still there

If it's got Neons in the tuning cabinet, change them all. Sounds like No5 is faulty. Also check capacitors, clean the unit out thoroughly and check any ribbon cables or connectors.

Check the buttons themselves.

Cheers,

Steve P.

Hello,

There are a couple of neon bulbs on the front panel, one for the stdby light and another one (green) that flashes whenever a button is pressed... i can see no other neon bulbs in this set...

I'll put the set on the bench this week...

If this is the sort of KT3 where the tuning controls are in a drawer that slides out then it is very common to find that the solid core wires they used crack where they go into the plugs. Often the insulation is left undamaged so this can be a tedious fault to find.

In my set, the tuning controls are under a removable cover on the right side of the cabinet.

Hello.
Does your set have the finger touch type buttons ?
Can you post a photo so I identify the model.

Hi
This is an early remote control set with a number displayed on a large LED and momentary push button controls to choose the station. I have had this fault, but I'm sure it was one of the two ICs on the PCB with the tuning wheels on it. Either that or a diode in the selector part of the circuit on the earthy end of the pots. ISTR the two ICs on there are slightly different. It's basically a ring counter which earths the end of each pot sequentially via a diode. When you select 2 but it says 5, does it select pot 5, pot 2 or neither? I think that would help pinpoint the area of the fault.

i have had this fault before and i think it will do it for all the even channel numbers that are selected
the fault is on the panel with the pots on it i think one of the ic is a counter of some sort

Nice sets - very commmon over here.
I have one without remote, mechanical ch switches, and a few months back i found the remote version - well, i salvaged its control panel in a smashed set on the street!
When i get round to mounting it in my other set I will let you know if i have any odd faults.
