This is a classic example of why a blanket change of everything is never a good idea. Obviously some of the capacitors will be beyond their useful life by now as will those presets, but the semiconductors? I'd bet the originals will be of a better quality than spurious replacements.
The rule of changing a couple of parts at a time then checking all is well is sound.
I'm sure if the machine had been taken to you in the first place he'd have saved money - amd you'd have saved heartache!

I now have a policy that if someone has tried to repair their machine and failed, I wont take it on.
