I don't know whether this one is rare but its certainly an oddball, only ever come across this one, no makers name or any hints on the case or chassis. One day I'll get round to it!

That is indeed a strange, curious set. Rather than a commercial set it could be a bespoke cabinet maker's cabinet housing a magazine design or kit chassis. Very nice and certainly rare.

Ah, that one. I used to have a cabinet...

Can't remember who took it off my hands, but someone certainly did. And I was sure a complete example had surfaced since, but I was probably thinking of yours

This set was supplied by Graves, the catalogue firm. I had one which I sold to a friend, who I believe still has it. There was a label inside somewhere giving the name of the model, I have a picture of the label somewhere which I will post when I can find it.

It's a Graves Minerva. I can't find the picture of the label but have found a couple of pictures that were sent to me by another friend who also has one of these sets when I was thinking of restoring the one I had, which was in bad condition.

This little American set using UX-based valves has been with me for decades: no indication of a maker, but the chassis has the remains iof a "Broadcast /Long Wave" label which is odd as there's no sign of a switch.

I've got one of these sets, it's an Emerson. The LW_MW switch is on top of the chassis, the label is missing on mine, probably an adaption for the UK market. The handle on my set is not original, it was missing when I found it.

Front panel is made from Repwood.
Made by Emerson when Walt Disney made film . 'Snow white and the 7 dwarfs.'
in 1930's.

I'd had my suspicions it was a Graves & the model (Minerva) had popped up a few times but no technical information. Unfortunately when I received it one of the valves had worked loose & hadn't survived. The other two had but I'm not sure what they are as the markings are very faint. Thanks for the confirmation that there's more than one out there! I might just give the chassis another going over with the mark 1 eyeball again. Thanks once again.
I've never seen the Snow White radio, its fascinating to see other rarities & oddball's in collections.

You can sometimes see 'non existent' or faint markings on old valves by breathing on them and turning the valve through all angles of light and viewing angle.

Hello,

Circa 1947 Ferranti produced the 147 table radio and the 447 radiogram with a pink or blue sort of Lloyd Loom front, as pictured below. (Pictures are from the internet.)

I do have the table radio but sadly not the radiogram.

Yours, Richard

I know someone who has the radiogram: apparently they were known as "The Pram" at Hollinwood (leastways, I think they were still at Hollinwood - or was it Moston?), likewise the T1246 television was known as "The Spider".

For the Graves Minerva, the Mullard Valve Replacement Guide for 1936 I have gives the line up as PM1HL, PM1HL, PM202.
A later 1951 guide gives PM2HL, PM2HL, PM202.
These are Mullard equivalents of the originals which may not have been Mullard, presumably by 1951 the PM1HL was not so available.

Apparently this weird set is a 1949 Setchell Carlson. (I'm none the wiser...)

Not odd by US standards but pretty odd by uk standards.

The Etronic Midgetronic, the case was originally intended for the Sargrove A3 https://www.vintage-radio.net/forum/...ad.php?t=88980

The other that springs to mind is the PYE Slim Six P128B

Sadly not pictures of my own examples I have broken my Fibular and I dont have access to much at the moment.

Cheers Mike T

Not sure if this qualifies as strange or oddball but perhaps interesting and maybe rare?

This is a McCarthy midget set made by Felgate Radio. Possibly a MC 422 from 1949 but there are some circuit differences (and some differences in the cabinet from the one on the service sheet) so maybe a little later. The components are mounted on a paxolin board but not a printed circuit board.
