Tektronix 651HR monitor
I have been fixing some Tek stuff recently. The last item is an old 651HR with a reasonable tube. There is a problem with the PAL decoder. I cannot find a manual or schematic on the web.
Can anyone point me in the right direction. Thanks Jonathan |

Re: Tektronix 651HR monitor
The 651 was to be found in various pieces of broadcast kit, I remember them in Ampex 1" 'C' format VTR monitor bridges. I think each monitor came with a full service manual and its serial number printed inside the front cover. So I'm sure a manual could be located. It is one seriously complex monitor, from memory just the sync seperator contained dozens of transistors.
That's what you get when you ask a scope manufacturer to design a tv monitor. Having said that they were quite reliable. Good luck with your search. Les

Re: Tektronix 651HR monitor
That's right.
It came out of an Ampex VPR-2B monitor bridge. Have an Ikegami monitor in there at the moment. Did not seem decent to install a Sony BVM. |

Re: Tektronix 651HR monitor
Hope your VPR-2B is in good order. We had 12 Ampex 'c' format machines. VPR-2's, VPR-2B's, plus 3 Marconi MR-2's which I looked after for several years before moving to MII format.
Good luck with your search for a 651 manual

Re: Tektronix 651HR monitor
Yes it is. Finally.
Took about six months of evening work to get it running properly including AST. Much, much more than any other project. Still not totally happy with the velcomp on the TBC-2B (vs my TBC-6), but have been told that the circuit was always a compromise. But it records and plays back in accordance with its spec and interchanges well with my other machines. Jonathan |

Re: Tektronix 651HR monitor
We didn't really suffer many AST problems, apart from when the "dog house" slip rings arced over. I did hear the BBC ran some of their VPR's with AST turned off to improve picture quality. We thought loosing still frame and slo-mo was not worth any possible slight improvement.
Later TBC's were certainly better regarding signal processing, we inherited 3 VPR-3's which were excellent. Sorry for going off topic from your request for a Tek 651 manual. Les

Over the years, I’ve passed the monitors (which mostly still worked) on to other collectors to put in the monitor bridges of VPRs. At one point, I wanted to collect an example of every broadcast manufacturer’s monitor, Barco, Chroma, Melford, Sony, Tektronix, Vistek, etc but I was told I was mad and the practicalities of it (especially storage) didn’t work out. I did however end up with most of the manuals for different monitors but finding them is a battle, as they are buried in storage. There is a Tektronix yahoo group, so it may be worth posting on there about the issue and there is a possibility that someone has already scanned the manual. Regards, Retrotechie |

Re: Tektronix 651HR monitor
Then you probably know that someone on that group has previously posted that they have copy of the manuals for the HR650 which might be a starting point if nothing else turns up?

Re: Tektronix 651HR monitor
Just wanted to thank everyone.
The monitor is now working better than ever and fully aligned to D65. Will shortly be going back into the VPR-2B monitor bridge. Jonathan |
