E.A.R. Triple Four record player
Hi, my EAR Tripple Four has just packed up, first the volume went low then nothing. I'm thinking of trying to get it back working, replacing the capacitors and resistors, but I have see that they have different voltages. I do have the wiring diagram for the player, but it does not give the voltages. can nayone help ?

Re: E.A.R. Triple Four record player
If your player just packed up, replacing capacitors and resistors is unlikely to fix it. It might be just failure of the cartridge.
Do you have a test meter and know how to use it?

Re: E.A.R. Triple Four record player
First check the cartridge connections. Is it the original Collaro Studio "O" mono crystal cartridge or a later replacement? The voltage rating for the capacitors and resistors will vary widely depending in what part of the circuit they are located. These are easy to access for service by completely removing the bottom panel. Whilst these have a mains-isolated chassis, please forgive me for asking what experience do you have in following a circuit diagram, trouble shooting and taking voltage measurements - which will need to be made when the unit is under mains power? I don't need to tell you that your EAR "Triple Four" (made in 1957) is one of the finest portable record players ever made.

Hi Edward,
to be honest all my electrical know how is until now confined to vintage car restoration. which is a lot simpler than this, lol. I'm reading the "Reviving your old record player" section and learning a lot. but a bit of help would be helpful, ha ha . Forgot to say its the original Crystal GC2 cartridge |

Type "Buzz Test" into the Google Custom Search box at the top of this page.

Re: E.A.R. Triple Four record player
If your cartridge is a Garrard GC2 then you have the EAR version fitted with the Garrard RC120/4H autochanger. If the cartridge has failed, then this may be a blessing in disguise as the GC2 is certainly not suitable for playing Stereo LPs - and - you can still buy a modern Stereo or Stereo Compatible cartridge for it. If a cartridge change works, then that's a good and easily resolved result. If though, the amplifier needs trouble-shooting then you may need a lot of help or maybe hands-on support from a specialist in the South West. It will be highly unlikely that any of the 4 speakers will have failed. Please keep us advised of progress.

Tried the Buzz test and nothing, so it must be the amplifier and I think that's sadly more then I can manage.

Re: E.A.R. Triple Four record player
I see that this player has an AUX input socket. Try the buzz test from there with AUX selected.

Re: E.A.R. Triple Four record player
Must admit, I feel a bit of a tit, I found the fault, at the rear is a plug that either goes to internal speakers or external speakers, it was pluged in, but was loose and not making contact. So I repaired the scocket, which had worn, and everything is back to normal again. Thanks for all your help and ideas. I'll probably be back...
