Since you quote a sampling rate, I assume you went with an LCD scope. What make / model did you decide to go with, and are you getting a probe with it?

Edit: Sorry, I see you didn't actually choose yet. Definitely avoid the version which is only 5MHz tops, and if you go for the 30MHz version you will need to source a X1 / X10 probe separately, which will add to the cost.
AH - having just checked the link took me not to the 30MHz but to the 5MHz! - That was naughty! It was Daniu ADS2050H, which is not what I wanted. Lucky I checked!

I've replied further to your oscilloscope questions in the other thread, you are more likely to get opinions about it over there I think. We'll keep this one for the PET itself.

Hi- I contacted someone on a PET/CBM Facebook group and went through a few checks. For example, I plugged the tape deck into the PET and pressed play. I then switched it on. What should have happened is that the tape deck should have switched on for about a second and then it should have stopped. It didn’t, it carried on running which means there is a problem on the main board not the monitor apparently.

That is entirely possible.

In order for the monitor to work, the main PCB needs to be producing horizontal sync pulses. That's what we are aiming to find out, whether it is or not, in part so that you don't have to go chasing after a nonexistent fault in the monitor.

If there are no horizontal sync pulses, then the problem is on the main board. Either way, your scope will come in useful not just for this job but for a whole host of other jobs. Next to a meter, it is the most useful piece of test gear you could ever have.

Yes-I’m looking forward to learning how to use it. Just a waiting game now!

IC problem solved. Needed a new one to generate the video signal. Never did get to use my new oscilloscope!

Work has taken over since the Covd-19 pandemic and I rarely have the time to visit! Things are starting to calm now so hopefully I will be able to come back and maybe offer help to others too!

I am now online with the PET too using a WiFi Modem and a TTL Connector so am happily visiting a few BBSs! I can’t thank you guys enough for all your help!

Cheers!
John

Did you ever get those replacement ICs for the IEEE interface, were they OK?

That is excellent - nice to see old machines fully restored.
