Re: Bush DAC10 - Live Chassis!
The only place I'd expect to find a DC supply would be on the Isle Of Man, they still have the old train system and nearby buildings, in times past at least, were powered from the rectified supply, everywhere else is now on AC.
This thread is starting to complicate things, a quick test with a meter will show whether the neutral plug pin is to chassis or not, factoring in a few Ohms for the bulbs.

Re: Bush DAC10 - Live Chassis!
When restoring these AC/DC sets I've always re-wired the AC feed so that the neutral is connected to the chassis AND the on/off switch, if only single pole, is in the live feed, otherwise if you only just connect the neutral to chassis, the original single pole on/off switch is usually in that feed, leaving live mains all over the set even when it is switched off...

Re: Bush DAC10 - Live Chassis!
To sum up, these sets have a chassis directly connected to the mains, both of the wires (neutral and line) are considered live. They have a live chassis no matter which way round they are connected, just make sure it is nigh on impossible to touch it without the use of tools, just like a mains plug.
No one (here) worries about direct to mains TVs or even other radios, why all the fuss over just one model? |

Re: Bush DAC10 - Live Chassis!
It could be worse, American GE sets always switch the neutral line. In practice, it's not usually a problem, the ground arrangement is pretty much star ground with the chassis lifted via an RC network.
Why the British sets were never done this way is beyond me, it would make things a lot safer.

When it comes to "why is the mains switch in the neutral line" it isn't, it's in the "to chassis" line, this removes the coupling of 240V (UK) AC to the volume control reducing hum regardless of which way round the thing is connected. |
