Thanks all for your input.

I don't have the expertise to remove the tube from the base, but I managed to open the sleeve - VCR97....(see pictures below)

So I guess we're looking at my fathers attempt to make an oscilloscope from an old radar set?

Yes , a VCR97 , the tube base confirms it . oops ! late again ! --- hadn't noticed we were on page 2 !

The tube base alone wouldn't confirm it to be a VCR97!
Prior to us seeing the photos where the tube is clearly marked as being a VCR97, it could equally well have been a VCR517 with a long-persistence phosphor.
