Hi Steve,

I did wonder if the figure second from the left might be Andy Pandy and I'm more inclined to think was just a group of celebrities. What ever it was it certainly wasn't a very convincing view of an actual screen image.

Although the wrong way up the square screen and speaker in your picture reminded of some Loewe sets

Nice effort Peter.

I wanted to mention again the Baird Townsman/Countryman. The second picture here is from Andrew Emmerson's book, and it shows there were two alternative frontal treatments. I wonder in what order they appeared?

A restoration of one of these sets appears HERE.

is Bonhams used 1949 for set in your first image.

I guess that date came from MBL. I see have that as the release date in your website. That one is much more attractive than the one in your second image. Your restoration achieved a super result (as usual). I assume this is the one in post #105??

My copy of Andy's book doesn't have either variant in it.

I agree!

It may be. This gentleman went on to have four Baird Townsmen. The first set was subsequently "upgraded" to give a brighter, pin-sharp picture and higher quality sound. Nothing to do with what I did to my own Baird: making it into a 'Bude' with a Bush chassis (described elsewhere).

No. This picture is from the most recent edition. If I can give Andy a 'plug' I will. The book's well worth getting.

The first of today's pictures from the book 'Old Television' by Andrew Emmerson and placed here with his permission.

This is the cover picture. I haven't had breakfast yet... wouldn't mind the slice of cake. The set shown looks to my like another artist's impression but you never know, it might not be. Any takers?

I remember occasionally seeing posts by Andrew Emmerson the Meldrum's Home Page mesaging system about 20 years ago, as well as many by Chris Bowden-Smith (KIF) of Transdiffusion.

Next is a somewhat intriguing view, scanned from a small original, of how Derby Day was televised. This appears to be pre-war but does anyone know the original source?

First: a general view, second: a close-up on the 'on-topic television in the home' content, third: a close up looking into the back of a mirror-lid receiver, and fourth: the real thing!

Note the 'G.Marconi' badge on the artist's impression of the receiver. I don't know what actual model it can be depicting though.

I don't know for sure but the first image might be from "The Eagle".

That's the wrong "real thing" though! Mine isn't quite right either but closer. The set is a 701 but the externals are very much more approximate than the CRT internals.

Ha! Yes, I had thought it might be a 701, but couldn't see any cabinet shoulders.

Any ideas for this one? A Halcyon perhaps? A Cossor 137T? Or yet another artist's impression?

No doubts on that one. Cossor 137T. (Both cased and uncased.)

Thank you Peter. To round off the pre-war materials, I have included this picture from Andy's book. This shows part of the exhibition of vintage television mounted at the Royal Festival Hall in 1986. This took place in a lobby area, and concert goers could drop by and have a look on their way into the concert.

I contributed a couple of sets but the majority were supplied by John Gillies. Several were shown working. I recall there was also a Marconi 701 or HMV 902, also working, in a rather nice 1930s room setting.

I've just finished this HMV 1816 and received permission from the director of furnishings to place it in the bedroom. It has had a re-gun tube at some stage which is still in very good condition. Apart from the usual de-couplers, a combustible valve holder and all the waxies, there was very little wrong with it. All the sliders are good. Does anyone know if EMI did a turret conversion for this model?

Very nice, Steve! There was a similar type of set with doors, an opulent HMV 1806 I think, shown working at the Festival Hall exhibition.

Now for something completely different... though still very much "television in the home"... mechanical television in colour.

This is a 120-line mirror screw I constructed some years ago. These two videos were taken from across the room with my mobile phone. This was necessary because the picture width varies with viewing distance. Sorry I didn't remove the barometer on the wall before recording - it's rather a distraction - and the frame bars are of course artifacts. The actual screw rotates at 25Hz (twice a Baird televisor's speed) so flicker is not too bad. Note the flashing in front of the device. This is because the whole thing is irradiated in brilliant modulated light that carries the video information.

Hi Stephen
It's possible that the 14 channel EMI incremental tuner was available for Band 1 and 3 conversion of this range of models. The tuner was fitted later 1824A models.
The HMV 1816 has near BREMA IFs of 35.5Mc/s vision and 38Mc/s sound.

That thing is just amazing Steve. I'd love to see it live some day (without the bars).

That certainly is something different! What amazing quality. What is the modulated light source?

Thanks David. I guess the the HMV must have been one of the first sets with higher frequency IFs?

Peter's photo of that Loewe set (post 141) seems to be the answer to the question "What do you get if you cross a television with a ziggurat?"

The cabinet styling appears more Central American than Bauhaus.

A 702 lights up the room for this family watching a fake image.
