Playing DVD on old TV
Hi all
I have a nice little Crown black and white portable set that, I believe, works. I'd like to play the odd DVD through it and wanted to check what I would need to make this possible. I think I need an RF modulator - am I correct? Something that would take the component out from the DVD and enable me to take an output to the TV via coax. Martin

Re: Playing DVD on old TV
Yes Martin! Either a dedicated product or something stripped out of a games console etc. I simply use old VCR's that have a failed mechanism [they don't need to be able to actually play tapes] just light up! Available for next to nothing and it makes them useful again. You could strip the modulator out of those but I don't bother, as the box makes a useful stand for a small TV. Plug in your DVD player via Scart and the RF Out goes to the TV. The household standard once upon a time. Now long gone, like VHS Video Rental Shops!

Check that it doesn't have a composite video input somewhere.

Re: Playing DVD on old TV
I have just binned a VHS and don't have room for one in its entirety.
Good move eh I've found something on ebay I think may fit the bill - would it be OK to DM a link to someone to see if what I have found is right for the job? For info, the TV is a Crown 7TV-105

RF modulators can be found with grey Playstations and also some early 90s JVC and Panasonic video cameras in a lead supplied with them. Then all you need is a 5v 'wall wart'.
Most markets/car boots have sellers with a box of random cables which may yield a result. I bought two from a charity shop a couple of years back.

Re: Playing DVD on old TV
I have a number of these excellent modulators. You are very welcome to one FOC. It only requires a modest 9v supply. Fully tuneable over the UHF band complete with test signal.
If any use just send your details via pm. John. |

Re: Playing DVD on old TV
Here we go... just got the modulator and trying it out very quickly from a battery (I will use a regulated supply in due course).
10 points for anyone who can guess the film.

Plan 9 From Outer Space...
I would have kept the quiz element going but I fear it would be off topic

Re: Playing DVD on old TV
You may encounter a problem in that TVs of that era have no way of changing the aspect ratio, and DVD players assume they're talking to a 16:9 TV. This won't really matter with 4:3 material like Plan 9, but you may have to put up with watching 16:9 material squeezed down into the 4:3 frame, with tall thin people. Some DVD players have more options to control this than others.

Re: Playing DVD on old TV
My intention is to get a few DVDs with material shot pre 16:9.
What I do have an issue with is vertical and, to a lesser extent, horizontal hold. While this is pretty much a fun thing - just watching the odd disc now and then - I would like the picture to be stable. What I was experiencing was a reasonable picture until an edit, at which point the screen would start to scroll. It's an old TV that's not been used for a long time, so the fact it still works to a large extent is good news. I don't fancy doing too much poking around inside a TV as the voltages etc scare me, but I'd be interested to know if there is any simple test/ tweak I can try. It's worth pointing out that the set has V and H hold controls on the side which are easy to adjust - I can get a stable picture, but inevitably it doesn't stay long-term.

Re: Playing DVD on old TV
Probably worth getting a proper PSU to work with it. Same goes for the TV. Make sure the PSU being used for the TV is up to the job current wise. It may be just the modulator being under powered. Some of the caps may have dried out in the little telly. It might get better with use. John.

Re: Playing DVD on old TV
It looks like there is some noise and a herringbone pattern on the screen.
If you haven't done so already try tuning the modulator to a different frequency, in case the one it is set to coincides with a local digital multiplex. Also note, that the top portion of the UHF TV band may well have powerful 5G signals in your area.

Re: Playing DVD on old TV
Cheers chaps.
I was using the battery as a quick test as I didnt have time to make a good connection to the power supply for the modulator. The TV is actually mains or battery and I'm running it from the mains. I will try out changing the frequency on the modulator soon.
