Default GD8 Germanium diode

I have one of these in a circuit, polyskop II, that appears open circuit on my DVM diode test. Is there any reason why this device should not test normally?
What would be a suitable replacement?
Although the component list identifies it as "GD8 E" it is marked 8E R12
