Can anyone recommend a good 405 line tv to start with?
Hi all
I’m looking at getting a 405 line tv for my bedroom as I live the thought of having a whistling set where I can blast testcard D through whilst I’m repairing my various wirelesses etc. I’ve never worked on TV's before, but I know about mains EHT etc. I’d prefer a set that is non mains EHT and is as safe as they get, although I appreciate this is not common with older tech! Would I have to discharge CRT etc if a set has been sat for 40-50 years? Also is it necessary to discharge caps on TV's? I have never done it on my radios, but I don’t work on live chassis unless absolutely necessary. Many thanks,

Have you considered the high cost of a standards converter that will be required as well. You must be a fast learner as it’s taken me best part of 40 years to become a semi - experienced restorer and still learning.
Another option is to find one that’s already been restored and working. Good luck what ever you decide Andy

I’ve done a few sets now so I feel I’ve learnt my way around valve radios etc. 40 years? I’d consider you a master at that mate.
I plan on using a VHS player that has a built in standards converter.

If only it was that simple! A VHS player will have a built in modulator which will output a signal on UHF or VHF if it's for Europe. Unfortunately, even though a 405 TV needs a VHF signal, it needs the correct 405 line VHF signal. So, as Andy says, you will need a standards converter. This takes in a 625 composite video signal from a freeview box, VHS or DVD player and outputs a 405 line signal on VHF. This costs about £200 and there is no way round that! You can also generate the correct signal using a computer if your skills are up to it, but you will still need a VHF modulator. In terms of TV's, I would go for something from the late '50's. These tend to be fairly available and reasonably cheap. The biggest single problem with TV's is the line output transformer. They really are a weak point as they generate the high voltage for the CRT. Some makes of set have more reliable LOPT's than others, but they are all now so old that problems are almost inevitable. They can be overcome but usually at some considerable cost. It's more a case of what sets you can find within your budget and locality. TV's don't travel well by courier! Your best bet is to have a look round, find some makes and models that appeal and then post the details on here and people can advise if they would be suitable for a first restoration. Some sets are much more forgiving than others. Hope that helps, Cheers Nick |

There will be no eht kick in a crt after all those years or the caps. Though can hold it for a while.

Re: Best starter set?
I have a Pye V410 (21" version of V210) complete and untouched but at a distance to you.
I already have a V210LB (easy to do sets, with pcb) PM if interested. |
