Default Old Potentiometer repair

I am trying to restore a potentiometer from a Sony HP211A , which is a concentric stereo volume control with loudness tap. The pot has been damaged , maybe bent sllghtly or glued , and the two halves wouldn't turn independently so I took it apart. Unfortunately I assumed a standard construction and was concentrating on getting the shafts separated and didn't notice it was put together with two copper pieces positioned somehow along with the wiper, and I'm a bit stumped as to exactly how and where the two small bits of copper fit. Presumably they are centre-detent springs? . If anyone can point me to a drawing or photos that would be great , I've had a good google with no luck so far .I have the wiper back in place ok but not the next bit.

They probably act as a clutch so the two sections can be turned as one but can be separately adjusted if necessary. There’s no need for a centre detent on a volume control, usually only used with balance or tone controls.

...unless they're part of a system to give a pseudo-switched attenuator feel, i.e. a clicky rather than smooth rotaion?

do they not sit on the flats of the inner shaft to provide drag between the two shafts so they can turn together, a clutch as has been mentioned

Thanks for responses , I think there may have been a clutch and perhaps why the pot was binding - anyway I dispensed with them and it works fine.
