Default TECHNICS SL-HD505 CD Player laser.

Not very vintage, but, this mid ‘90’s deck is part of a stack mini system but is not stand alone. It connects with a ribbon cable to the amplifier. It is a high quality system but laser is now tired and weak. I can find a few USA and 2 German sellers online for it and it is quite expensive. One seller mentions that there are two different ones, one having a height difference on the sled rail part.
Looking at the pics, the moulding looks different but this could be because it’s a pattern part. Has anyone any experience of this potential pitfall as i cannot risk ending up with the wrong one. I’d like to fix this for a friend, but it’s on the borderline of being worthwhile. May end up just buying a cheap DVD player in the AUX in.

Success! There is apparently a difference where that worm drive fits which would make it sit at the wrong height. The Ebay ones don't have identical mouldings so i cannot be sure they will work. Any knowledge from Panasonic /Technics ex dealers out there would be greatly appreciated

I wasn't aware there were two different Lasers for this unit (worked in a Panasonic ASC for 25+ years).
If the eBay ones have different mouldings, they are a different Laser and I wouldn't order.

Any pictures you can supply of the eBay one?

Here’s a pic where only one of the sellers has an arrow at the area which can differ

Well, I don't ever remember there being two Lasers.
I can't remember there being a bulletin about the change of Laser from Panacronic.

I jave to say if it's a different moulding then it's a different Laser.
Hi-Fi Engine don't have the manual for your Player so cannot confirm the Model Number of the Laser fitted.

Do you have a Service Manual?

Here is a link to the service manual:

https://elektrotanya.com/technics_sl.../download.html

Looking at the parts list Pana call the laser assy the traverse deck (item 305) there is only one part number, that is not to say there were not later revisions, unfortunately I don't have access to the Pana technical site any longer so can't advise any further.
I hope this helps.

Thanks Red to Black for the link to the Manual.

So the Traverse Mech is listed as the RAE0152Z.
A Google search for this comes up with some results but very few, if any actuall, offer the whole Traverse Mech. But the Lasers listed as this under the results should be ok.
Does this part number tally with the eBay listing you found bikelectro?

Thanks for your replies folks. Only one seller gives the part number and it does tally. It is all the way from USA though, I was hoping someone might have one to sell me! No such luck. I’ll ponder a bit more but I fear it’s a gamble that may not be sensible.

I have just ordered one from China, shape and dimensions look correct. £12.24 - cross fingers, it’ll take a while, will let you know how I get on. Thanks again.

Well, i got one from the Chinese seller and it looked identical. It came with the static protect short already unshorted, which made me smell a rat. On fitting the ribbon i noticed it was broken. I wasn’t sure if it was like this already, so i did a repair which I’ll try to upload a pic of. Anyway, upon fitting it would close the drawer, lens up and down and my tester showed infra - red light being emitted, but would not spin up the disc.
I ordered another thinking maybe my repair was a fail or I’d damaged it with static - the new one is the same result, so i fitted the original weak one and it is working weakly and skippy as before. There are no presets o the board. So I’ve sent a message to the seller and see what happens.....
Just in case anyone has any ideas, but probably call it a day with this deck

Finally managed to get a refund from this Chinese seller after much argument and only after leaving negative feedback!
Both lasers had indented connector edges, cut static protection and when I dismantled one, the mirror piece was a little misty with airborne dirt. I think theses are reworked units or have simply been pulled from scrap machines.
I would say , be sure not to buy if the photo shows the static protect short not to be intact, there are a few currently showing on listings like this.

So, I'm still on the lookout for one of these that isn’t from too far away.
