Default Early Video Recorder Advertising. Part One.

Here is a little booklet I scanned

Looks to be from the early 1980's.
I will have to post it one page at a time.

Enjoy.

Part Three.

We won't worry about the back cover. Very much like the front cover.

Brands, models, prices all listed. Australian Dollars. Someone will be able to work out which year by the models and movie releases.

Fascinating reading.

A very interesting piece of history. I pity the Geoffrey Button sales staff trying to both sell the features whilst negotiating the price with so many models to choose and with each marketing to the punter how good they were.

Video Choice published a review of VCRs together with video sweeps (some of which had very strange shapes), technical conclusion and a "Which" Best Buy. Only one format came tops and began with the letter B. Sanyo VTC 9300 excepted! It runs to 183 pages so I won't be scanning it just now.

There's my AKAI VS-5 there!

"Beep beep beep beep BREAKDOWN"!

These ads must be from 1981.

Yes it does have a little buzzer inside that beeps whenever you make mistakes such as pressing PLAY without a tape inside. Very interesting machine. Mine has several faults though and the RIFA cap in the mains supply exploded and produced a thick white smoke!

I have just one VS-5 in my collection.
Took me years to get it. Unfortunately the back-up battery died years ago and the acid penetrated the circuit board making it leaky.

View the pictures to see the damage.

Damn! These Varta batteries are a big problem on old Macintosh computer motherboards. They really do leak and cause tons of damage on the PCB. Hopefully yours is repairable by cleaning the PCB and placing jumper wires in place of the eaten traces.

My Akai VS5.
tucked away in the corner of my workshop.
Actually had many fond memories of them , they were also very popular in the rental market and we did a lot of advertising in the papers along with its big brother the Akai VS10 .
Theres a lot of early advertising material on another forum i use for early video recorders and the VS5 is featured on one of them for sure.

Apologies for the poor picture.
