Default Grundig TK14L - playing both sides together?

Hi,
I have bought a Grundig TK14 L from ebay as I am sure this was the model my Dad had when I was growing up.

He died in 1985 and I found some tapes which I remember he talking and singing on. The plan was to hear his voice for the first time in 35 years.

The machine works, the forwarding belt is broken but it plays and rewinds.

The problem is it plays boths sides of the a tape at the same time. So I am hearing music going backwards and the correct side together.

It this because of a problem with the machine?
Have I bought the wrong model?
Is there a setting I am not seeing?

Thank you for your help
Phil

It sounds as if you are playing a 4 track tape on a 2 track recorder. You will hear two tracks at once, one backwards.

Was there a 4 track version of this machine. I remember it so well from my childhood.
Also, Did this model have a switch to change it to 2-track stereo or half-width mono?

Thank you
Phil

Yes Phil it is the TK 23, the attached brochure shows the standard TK 23 and the attached photo shows the de Luxe or L version.

The 4 track TK 17 & TK 17L are almost identical to the TK 23.

Hi David,
I have bought the wrong one!

I will start looking for the TK23 L and put the TK14 L on ebay and start again!

Thank you for your help

The alternative would be to send the tapes to somebody else to be copied. Lots of forum members could do this as it doesn't require specialist expertise or equipment.

Speaking generally, a 4 track recorder will play 2 and 4 track tapes, while a 2 track recorder will only play 2 track tapes.
