i think this one has Germanium transistors in the preamp stages instead of the silicon transistors of later units

During the evaluation I found that one EL has bad AC188 in the output stage, while AC187 is fine.
Replacement Tungsram transistors came in matching pairs, but they are smaller cases 1mm less in diameter and have to be shimmed into the heat sink.
I don't remember - do we have to use matching pair in the output stage?
Something tells me that I'd have to replace both with matching pair. It would be an additional PITA to shim 2 transistors instead of one :-(

Well, when one of the output pair of my 1969-vintage EL3302 failed in the mid-1970's I just used a germanium transistor from the odds and ends box in the lab where I was working, and it seemed to work OK.

What is the current replacement for AC127 Germanium transistor in regulator?

I don't want to invest the same amount I paid for the player into one transistor, have a hand full of Silicone n-n-p 2N2222, also have some original Germanium AC187 and AC188. AC187 should work no problem?

Ok early Norelco has arrived today.
As I noted before totally different PCBs (no screw-ground to the main PCB), spring tabs speaker connection (no wires) and both pots have real springs under the knots. I had the same version when I was a kid
Model number is EL3302/94 versa EL3302/94G on later Norelcos.

Very nice piece - with the new belts in place plays loud and clear even with old caps.
One question - capstan shaft has absolutely no vertical play in this one.
Every other one I own has a vertical play in capstan shaft (in a horizontal position I can pull the capstan shaft up a little bit maybe a few tens of millimeter).

Doesn't the vertical play depend on how accurately you adjusted the lower bearing after you fitted the belt?

That is a good question. Should there be a play or not? All pervious ELs had a play upon arrival without touching the bottom plate. I could feel a knock flipping the recorder upside down.

I think that a balance has to be struck - you don't want the capstan moving up and down if you use the cassette recorder as a portable - but you certainly don't want it so tight that it doesn't turn freely.

When I replaced the belts in my EL3302 a couple of years ago, I slid a sheet of paper in the gap between the flywheel and the bearing. Then I adjusted the bearing so it was pressing gently on the paper, and tightened the screws. And when I pulled the paper out, there was hardly any play at all - but neither was it too tight.

Well, I guess I made it too tight - the belt started falling off the wheels and motor shaft pulley

The old version has a total of 19 electrolytic caps versa 10 in newer one. PIA to recap might be the reason for better sound.

if it's working, i would leave the original capacitors alone, to preserve its originality.

Need some clarification on the s/n, most of mine are AH 02/03 with 3-digit s/n: 732, 849, 907, 950. So they are from 1967, 1968 and two last ones from 1969?
What is then 1970 - first "0" and then "1" for 1971?

that's right, 0xx was 1970 and 1xx was 1971 and so on.

Ok the majority of mine (4 pcs) are from 1969. Is there any logic behind the s/n? Numbering started with the model production, each revision production, each year, each factory has its own numbers? Plus AH has "02" and "03" versions - two production lines? I put them all together based on production dates and did not find much logic. They are all EL3302 by Norelco and Philips (/00G, /52G, /94, /94G and /15P).

Every factory certainly had their own serial number sequence, and even the numbering system may have been different between factories.

Each model number suffix will probably have its own serial number sequence, but this may have been different between factories as well.

The number behind AH (or WT or SV etc) is a technical revision level (factory specific) which mostly correlates with the production date (a higher revision level corresponds to a later date in most cases).

Different production lines or batches may have been indicated by the first digit or digits of the actual serial number, if they were indicated at all and again: not in the same way between factories. I'm pretty sure Singapore didn't use this but Hasselt or Vienna may have.

Thank you for the info!
Got another old Philips from 1966, AH00, has older date numbering 44/66, model EL3302/22D. S/n does not seem to be low: 366587, older PCBs, both knobs have black numeric engraving.
When was the first production of EL3302?

Pictures. So what is the date on the earliest EL3302 known? I saw video of WR EL3301 (rebranded Mercury TR8000) dated 47/66
