There are four people in Ireland that I can think of that are not members of any of the three forums and have working 405 line TV's.

For this survey I have grouped all of there TV's and converters together.

No of working 405 TV's 6

Converters
2 X Aurora
1 x Domino
3 X Hedghog

All located in Ireland

One used occasionally and working as new, 2 almost working requiring small amount of work, 2 non-runners needing serious attention. Weak CRT's the main problem. I use an Aurora, usually fed from a DVD player. Based in Liverpool.

Thanks Frank. I too have a pretty good idea about certain collections that are unlikely to provide data here, and will be including these in the final totals (all completely anonymously).

This won't in any way be a survey of scientific rigour, but still I think it will give us a pretty good impression of how common working 405-line sets - and viewing - remain today, 34 years after 'closedown'.

a) 9 dual standard sets, 12 405 line sets of many different manufacturers. In various states from 100% restored and operational to completely untouched condition. Unfortunately space restraints means I can only play with 1 or 2 at a time.

b) Aurora X1 and possibly the last Domino converter sold. Tuned to band I channel 1

c) Rugby, West Midlands

My brother in NZ has a 405 line TV (English Philco) that was modified to run on 625 and is working & restored. It had a self oscillating line output stage and its frequency was increased by increasing the gap between the two halves of the line output transformer's core. It was left otherwise standard, but an FM detector was added in the sound and its video detector reversed , and a vintage TV tuner hung on its antenna inputs so it could receive NZ VHF TV transmissions.

The 625/405 Converter I use (designed by David Grant)is called the Dinosaur converter. It has a very good interpolater and produces excellent converted video. Also it has a built in Testcard generator. I built two of his units into professional cases with power supplies, modulators and video and RF level controls & metering. I also have a spare IC set for them. I think his design was very special. I wish he had made more of them.

Thanks for the continuing flow.

If anybody is hesitating because they are not sure how much of their collection works, simply state your count is approximate. I shall be reading again carefully through each post at the end.

Hi Steve
Sadly it has to be a "Nil Return" for working 405 line sets since the LOPTX in my Cossor 916 failed, but I do hope you will include the means I still have for generating System A vision and sound
viz
A PC with an ATI Radeon HD 2400 Pro Graphics card
Windows 10
Jeroni Paul's WinModelines software tool,
and a home built system A modulator based on the Early Television Foundation's design, tuned to channel B2, emulating the former service from the Holme Moss transmitter.

All credit to you Graham for your innovative solution! You join the 17 others that have declared so far, who have solved this problem their own unique way. More than I would have expected.

I'm currently totting up the results.

Yepp, keep 'em coming! I do hope this doesn't sound rude but it's now a bit like watching oil trickle more and more slowly out of a sump.

I think it will be sensible to hold off with the results until (say) 24 hours has elapsed since the last contribution.
