Default How many 405-line sets are operational today?

Do you watch 405-line television, using a converter or other method? Or do you know of others who do and may not post here?

If so please post in this thread.

Of interest :

a) The number of working and usable 405-line or dual-standard sets you (or your nominee) has access to. You may list them if you wish.

b) The method(s) you use to obtain the signal.

c) Your rough location in the UK - or the world!

If this can be converted into a 'poll' by a moderator, all well and good. However I don't understand how to do this myself, and am not sure whether it would be a flexible enough format.

Grateful for your help! As an example, I'll start the ball rolling with my own answers:

------------------------------

a) 3: 'Bude'. Philips 17TG100-U, Sony TV9-90.

b) Aurora

c) SW Midlands

Because some people won't want to publicise their collections, I emphasise that only the number of working sets is sought, and there is no need to say what they actually are.

I have an Ultra 6858 dual-standard set connected to a Domino standards converter. It worked last time I powered it up, but I confess that I have not done so for some time, as I don't currently have a means of producing an analogue signal since my last set-top box died. My digital TV doesn't appear to have an analogue output.

As stated in my profile, I am based in West Cumbria. My signal comes from Caldbeck.

One working 405 line only TV from 1955. Seldom used as no CRT's available new or rebuilt once it goes down.

One of these days I hope to get my Regentone TR20 back into operational order, but I chickened out of working on it alone, owing to the 7.5KV mains-derived EHT.

Steve, another Philips TG17-100U, must be one of the easiest sets to work on. Some time since last tried.

Source, 405 line recorded tape played through Ferguson 3V31, Via home made Modulator.

Three sets, a Stella 17" from 1959, a Marconiphone table set from 1955 with a rectangular tube and a dual standard Sony 990-UB.

All fed from an Aurora converter.

I think, for the sort of hours we are likely to put in, we are unlikely to see much deterioration of a good CRT today. The exception is the pre-war style 'ion burn' prone tube. I have seen these burns develop very rapidly.

Yes, and what a pin-sharp, bright, linear picture! The caps are usually good too. But careful of that LOPTy!

Seventeen restored & working sets, plus six unrestored working sets here.
Aurora & Domino standards converters + BRM 405 pattern generator.

Oldest set is from 1947, newest set (dual standard) is from 1966.
I use the sets on a regular basis, mainly to watch vintage programmes from various sources.
Never watch modern TV as it is rubbish & I don't have a licence

A great response, thanks!

I hope, at the end, we will be able to arrive at a meaningful tally of both sets and people; ie. 'viewers', taking into account also the sets running at the major museums, and certain noted television experimenters not active on this Board.

Hi.

I have a couple of Philips TVettes model 11TG190AT, one working and the other to be repaired. Also, a working GEC BT322 and a working Sony TV9 90UK. I have yet to look at my Ultra V1770 but I'm not too confident about that set hearing how bad they were even during their service life. That set looks to be quite a challenge to get fully operational.

My analogue standards converter is one that I built from the Darius design which I am very pleased with. This is used with the Darius designed Channel 1 modulator which is very stable. I'm also hoping to build a Hedgehog converter in due course.

The TV signal is from the Redruth transmitter feeding a Goodmans set top box. Composite video then feeds the standards converter.

Regards
Symon.

EDIT: The standards converter box contains a Test card C generator that I built from Jon's Valve page website.
