Re: How many 405-line sets are operational today?
Of course, although many hundreds of sets have been listed ,each owner can only watch one set at a time, even though one may have 150 plus !
Looking through this thread it seems, therefore, there are about 100 potential viewers.

Now that's creepy. Ghosts of TV past.

Re: How many 405-line sets are operational today?
We learned yesterday on the Golborne Forum that Darryl has produced more than 800 405-line Auroras. A fair few folk will have bought more than one. Others will no longer be using theirs.
Clearly, a survey such as this one has limitations and will only come up with approximate results in the end. Steve |

Re: How many 405-line sets are operational today?
Here are the results.
The data was primarily supplied by this thread and similar threads on two other discussion boards. Needless to say, a big thanks for this! Added to this were my own past customer records and knowledge about other collections not declared in the internet threads, which included some estimated counts. The holding at the (Dulwich) BVWTM was included. Not included were sets that may be held in other museums, by stage/tv/film prop/equipment suppliers, and any sets held outside the UK and Ireland. Number of collections with working 405-line sets in UK and Ireland: 90. Total number of working 405-line-capable sets (including dual-standard and colour): approx. 700 Signal sources in use: Aurora: 98 Darius: 2 Dinosaur: 3 Domino: 7 Hedgehog: 12 Pineapple: 2 CO6/501: 1 Other/Special: 22 Locations of owners in the UK and Ireland - see map. This map is copyright-free. Each TV icon represents one collection (of any size). Every care has been taken for positional accuracy but some Irish locations have had to be guessed. Many collections have been hidden by the pile-up of icons around the London area. A small version of the map is attached. You can download a larger version HERE. Steve |

Re: How many 405-line sets are operational today?
Nice work Steve,
Would be good if this was added to the sticky list and kept open, updated totals every year as more get added ?

Updates will be no problem. People should post here or PM me with details and I can quickly update the online map and my supporting records.

Re: How many 405-line sets are operational today?
That’s brilliant, and who would have thought there would be that many collections and working sets right now in 2019?!
Back when I started my rather odd hobby of collecting old radios and TVs, I genuinely thought I was the only person to be so daft as to collect what was essentially seen as ‘rubbish’ by everyone else around me! It’s great to see that there are so many like minded folk about. Now I need to get back to work on these old sets and boost the numbers up a bit Regards Lloyd |

Great job Steve,
It's really good to see what's where and what's happening within this hobby and it will be interesting to see how things grow over time. Cheers, Marc. |

Re: How many 405-line sets are operational today?
One assumes there must be many more people with 405 sets around (maybe collectors of only one set), as about 800 Auroras are reckoned to have been sold. I see the tally of Auroras in use is 98 and there are quite a few people owning several of them! Nevertheless this excellent survey probably understates the actual total of 405 users.

Re: How many 405-line sets are operational today?
I didn't add my half dozen 405 sets as I don't seem to have found any time to restore them despite buying an Aurora to use with them when I did
I like the look of them as display items though and hopefully will get round to them some time. Nothing that interesting though, the best being a (early fifties?) Regentone console with a Radio in it too, mains EHT so wont start with that! Steve. |
