Apple II computer
While clearing out an old storeroom on the railway we came across this Apple II with 3 disk drives. I am trying to find out if it is worth offering for sale or should it go for recycling. Anyone have a view? Comments would be most welcome.

Re: Apple II computer
Don't bin it !.
It's worth some money, but not a fortune. There are plenty collectors who would love to take it off your hands. |

Re: Apple II computer
Definitely don't recycle it, that is a bit of computing history and there will be people willing to buy it. The presence of the disc drives will add value.
By 'Railway', do you mean the Great Central? I happen to be planning a visit down there in a couple of weekends or so, so that's a bit of a spooky coincidence. (I'm not an Apple man myself). |

Re: Apple II computer
Oooh I always wanted one of those. Not sure what a sensible price is though. Have you tested it at all?

Re: Apple II computer
I can't test it 'cos I do not have a suitable monitor, the designers didn't think to add a HDMI output - very remiss of them. Powers up alright, no smoke.

Re: Apple II computer
Apparently they all offer composite video out via an RCA / Phono jack as standard, so you'd just need something with a yellow 'AV' input to try it out with.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_...utput_hardware Unfortunately the most modern TVs, if they still offer AV-in at all, tend to have a four pole 3.5mm jack socket into which you have to plug a short lead with the usual white, red and yellow RCA audio and video connectors. Most people don't understand what the little lead is for and lose it or throw it away within minutes of unboxing the TV. Anything a little bit older with a yellow 'AV-in' jack, or any old analogue CCTV monitor with a BNC video-in should work. If you can say it works, that will definitely generate more interest. |

Re: Apple II computer
I had an Apple IIe, two Disk II drives and a monitor which I sold in 2019 due to lack of personal interest.
It sold for £300 and the gentleman who bought it was prepared to fly his own plane to Newcastle to get it! |

Re: Apple II computer
Now that would have been quite a feat some decades before HDMI had been invented!

Re: Apple II computer
I believe Downwind27's comment regarding the unforgivable lack of HDMI-out was intended as a wry (not serious) observation.

Re: Apple II computer
From what I remember there were option cards that supported additional languages so if you were selling it that information would be useful if there is anything more than the basic configuration is inside.
A long time since I used one of these. |

Re: Apple II computer
How are you getting on with the Apple II?
Have a Apple II+ here and a clone, kindly flown in from Canada by friends. It has been a interesting project rebuilding it up. (it came in pieces)

Re: Apple II computer
I think the OP has already said it "Powers up, no smoke".
Downwind27 seems a relatively infrequent visitor to the forum, so you may get a quicker response if you drop him a PM about it, in which case he may (or may not, depending on his forum settings) get an immediate email notification drawing his attention to the PM. Last I heard from him (via PM) he was looking for a suitable box to pack it all up in, so I'm sure that on one level he would be very happy if someone local could save him the trouble by making him a fair and realistic offer for it. |

Re: Apple II computer
Just spotted this one. The original Apple II is quite valuable, being the first of the II line. Good to hear it wasn't recycled.
The IIe would be the most common of the IIs, and still worth hanging on to or selling even if not in working order. I've got three of those (all the first model, not Enhanced or Platinum) and a IIc. If anyone finds a IIgs, make sure that the battery hasn't leaked all over the main board. It has that unfortunate trait in common with some of the Amiga line. |

Re: Apple II computer
In 1982, I used one of these machines to interface a Mitel PABX to a Tandem computer system, to provide BT's first public call centre service, based in Bristol. Competitors always wanted to know the secret of how we had done it. The AppleII was hidden in a corner behind a screen!
All it did was to convert the block-format serial data from the Mitel PABX operator port to standard serial data messages to go to the Tandem, and vice versa. I think the service was branded Telecom Red (not the later Red-Care), but I may be wrong. -Jeremy
