Re: Valve has gone to air, 'my vacuum has escaped!'
In my penultimate position in the trade, one of the engineers was working on a Ferguson 'Stereo' telly, the one with all the LED's on the front ... (Forgotten the model).
As he removed the tubebase to replace the faulty/green LED, a faint 'hiss' was heard ... Needless to say, he rather smartly returned the PCB to whence it came, & worked around the board in situ ... Wiggling the tubebase you could see the pin in the tube neck moving! The customer was informed (who lived opposite the shop) & we'd regularly ask about the set, 'it's been fine' was always the response. Many thanks for all the pointers guys, much appreciated, a new valve will be sourced in Ernest. Mark |

Re: Valve has gone to air, 'my vacuum has escaped!'
I had a couple of GZ34s go to air when in storage, I put it down to the cracks in the glass bases caused by stresses because of the rigid construction, the leads through the glass were 1mm diameter pins the same as standard B7G and B9A valves, these were soldered directly into the pins in the plastic base, there was nothing flexible like the wires through a pinch seal and consequently expansion or contraction would stress the most vulnerable part, the glass to metal seal.

Fiddlesticks, this is the trouble with predictive spelling checkers on hand-held devices, that & having hands like feet/not paying attention.
It's a wonder I've managed to fix anything ... Have found a UL84 online, hopefully it'll survive the postal system Mark |

What makes you think it 'was' a vacuum ....... a little bird tells me that getters never 'get': Argon, Krypton, Neon ................ [they may be noble .... but their electrons are hardly 'inert' ....]!
You get the drift ... or was it "Gone With The Wind"? Hee! Hee! Ho! Ho!

The Lucas smoke made me chuckle too. Replacement output valve has been ordered ... Let's hope this one holds out (air!) Mark |
