Pilkington did consider colour. I don't have a copy of the report but when I have time I can look at Briggs Vol 5 to get a BBC centric view of the results.

Thre are 2 separate questions here. 405 or 625. PAl or NTSC or SECAM. I don't have Briggs' book on the history of colour TV but this would be a very good starting point for answering these questions.

Have seen arjoll's TV aerial made my mind wander to the performance of these colour systems when receiving on/beyond the fringe. As we all know Band I signals can go a long way, so I wonder how acceptable NTSC 405 line would have been in comparison 625 line PAL on Band I on the reception edge? Certainly in the days of Band I DX it was noticable how quickly SECAM signals lost their noise as the signal strength rose above the SECAM FM threshold.

Lets not get into a political debate here! I am an out and out socialist and saying that the Labour party put the boot in really is not for a public forum on vintage electronics! I wonder where you have got the opinion that a political party would actually decide on what TV standard we were going to have? Most MP's couldn't even wire a 13amp plug (more so the Tory ones), in cases like this they are more or less told by advisers!

I think the time has come to close this thread, which isn't really going anywhere.
