A cobbled together prop is OK. The trouble comes when they use recognisable wrong equipment. Seeing someone shouting into a microphone while twiddling the tuning knob on a BC221 is funny if you recognise it.
But if we insisted on real gear, props departments would have to build real atom bombs, real death-dealing positronic ray machines and real daleks. It could be nasty if one got on the loose. The target audience of films and TV are electromuggles. The BBC iPlayer currently has 'The Shining' as their contribution to people's mental health in current circumstances. The radio transceiver at the hotel looks to be by Collins. So full marks to Mr Kubrick. David

The Shining:
'You see? It's okay, he saw it on the television' The current Playstation 5 (PS5) ad shows a brief nixie tube sequence as part of a montage of older technology. (So at least someone knew what they were doing..) Dave |

Watching an old (1980s) episode of 'Cheers' this morning, much of the plot centred around a rather grand looking house.
In the final scene of the episode a more distant shot revealed a mast-mounted quarter wave ground plane for CB (9' vertical, three 9' horizontal radials) looming over the house, a indication of how normal / essential CB radio was considered to be at the time, when even someone with a nice posh house thought nothing of having such ungainly looking metalwork bolted to it. |

Watching Money for Nothing on TV yesterday, I saw this piece of equipment on a shelf behind the chap who makes the weird lamps. Been bugging me; don't recognise it at all; looks like a test set for a transceiver perhaps? Looks to be around 2ft tall. Any ideas folks? Best I could do with the pic; it was never in focus in the recording unfortunately.

Could be genuine and possibly American.

It certainly looked genuine; if he had made it would have had a couple of light bulbs on top.
![]() Looks like a sig gen on top half; what bottom half does is a mystery? Sadly can't read the manufacturers name on the bottom, unless someone recognises the style of the logo? |

Possibly RME Let’s hope he doesn’t ‘improve’ it.

Yes, let's hope Jim; makes me cringe sometimes watching them destroy a perfectly good antique piece of equipment.

What was the radio that HM Queen has on her desk in "The Crown" (and, one imagines, in reality)? Nice looking number with a pleasant green glowing dial.

Did any one see the Amateur Radio Station in this mornings ITV4 rerun of the Avengers ?
Emma Peel visits a Radio Ham with a impressive Shack, for advice on strange Radio Signals, being used for jamming. When I could take my eyes of a gorgeous young Dianna Rig, I spotted a Heathkit Mohican, a Hallicrafters RX poss a A38, R1155, KW SWR Meter, possible a KW2000 or similar, and loads of other equipment I didn't recognize, but apart from the ubiquitous Chess Board, (a touch of the Tony Hancocks) it did look the part. However I did miss some of the sequence, and would like to see it again, is it available on catch up ? ![]() ![]() Ken G6HZG

Just watched Hard days night (Beatles) on BBC Iplayer.
Lots of Shots of 60s TV Cameras, mixing boards and recording equipment in a couple of scenes.
