Re: 1964 R.C.A. Round tube color TV back to life
I remember seeing 625 line test transmissions in the early days of 625 lines, which featured the US Indian head test card. I think they were colour tests but I only saw them in black and white.
Congratulations on getting your set working. |

Re: 1964 R.C.A. Round tube color TV back to life
For someone who sometimes dips (without participation) into the U.S vintage 'color' TV forums, the idea of test card F on your photos amuses me greatly! I agree it looks such a compact chassis. I've never seen a round US colour tube outside the cabinet before. All very interesting! Let's see more!

Re: 1964 R.C.A. Round tube color TV back to life
Hi Colin
This is a simple PAL TV with no delay line. I have traced the circuit of the PAL modification in the TV and it is almost the same the Ekco CT100 colour TV and I have the circuit for that, some of the parts are missing and the Ekco uses a ECC88 valve. I will remake to the Ekco circuit and see if it works. |

Re: 1964 R.C.A. Round tube color TV back to life
PAL delay lines didn't become available in commercial quantities until 1966 so many trade tests were made with a delay line at the transmitter instead of in the receiver. I'm not sure what if any improvement that made.

Re: 1964 R.C.A. Round tube color TV back to life
This TV had been fitted with a Bush/Murphy push button UHF tuner on the back cover.
The tuner worked but was very stiff. Since the RCA tuner was still in place I removed the push button tuner and reconnected the RCA tuner. I found why it had been replaced it was very noisy , low gain and drifts. I wanted to reuse the front UHF knob with a replacement tuner. I found that a pot could be made to fit the slow motion drive,so I made a bracket to fit the two together. The tuner I used came from Sony KV1340. It was used because it had the same type of diode mixer as in the RCA tuner. I can now use the front UHF tuning knob and the picture is better. Keith |

I always wondered how good those UHF tuners that RCA used. Mixer diode and oscilator, do you think the tuner is actually faulty or is just made like that? The UHF tuners were very often just an addon to conform with FCC regs.

Re: 1964 R.C.A. Round tube color TV back to life
BrianC,
Is this the RMB set that you remember? This one came out of Television Centre a good few years ago. I also have another the same as this but it is badged as Murphy and has a slightly different front panel style. From what I can find out it is much the same as the Bush CVB100 (Mickey405 has one). It is shown in the RBM promotional film on one of the BVWS DVD's from a few years ago. This one has hand written dates of 1962. Mike...

Re: 1964 R.C.A. Round tube color TV back to life
The sets I remember, Trev, were definitely not intended for domestic use. They were monitors only with no RF circuitry and HUGE. The ones shown on the radiomuseum website linked to by NTSCuser on 7th Sept. shows them. The cabinets were made of Imlock, a proprietary extrusion based cabinet construction "kit".
You're lucky having two such early colour sets - and a world converter! |

Re: 1964 R.C.A. Round tube color TV back to life
Picture 1 looks like this set uses the V849/879 tuners (the Murphy version of the BUSH TV125). Another splendid looking set; I think I prefer it to the RCA for looks, though the RCA scores on it being more prototype/ further back in the evolution of the colour sets.

Re: 1964 R.C.A. Round tube color TV back to life
Hi
I just fitted the parts missing from the Ekco CT100 diagram two resistors and one pot and removed one resistor from the RCA mod. It now works the BBC 1 test card is NTSC and the colour bars , BBC 2 test card are in PAL so It is dual standard again. ( All it needs is to be SECAM for the full set only joking!) Next the poor horizontal hold, the height shrinkage and a total set up. Keith |

Shows how good NTSC and Simple PAL can be with a good signal, appreciate in the field the Delay line PAL will win out.
Really impressed with your work. Frank |

Re: 1964 R.C.A. Round tube color TV back to life
Hi All
Update on the RCA16 In the vertical stage I found that most of the 100k plus resistors high and these were replaced also c511,c512 and c138 were leaky and also replaced. When c138 was replaced I had no picture because cr101 was open circuit this was replaced with a BY140 and I now have a brighter picture and full hight with no reduction with heat. C 138 and cr101 are part of the Boosted Boost circuit to supply of 1100v to the CRT screens and the vertical scan a bit like the boost on the Line output stage. I have also replaced the phase detector diodes sr501a/sr501b and have good horizontal lock. Thanks Keith |
