ID a Sony Trinitron?
Hi. Can anyone identify the model number of this 1978 Trinitron from the Betamax SL-8600 ad?

Re: ID a Sony Trinitron?
Back in the day, when you wanted the best TV picture, you bought a Sony Trinitron. Never mind the weight, be nice to the Bank Manager (remember them?) and enjoy the best colour TV experience.
Bloomin' LCD has ruined all that. :-(

Re: ID a Sony Trinitron?
Agree, they were the very best and Sony built a solid reputation on those sets sadly squandered in recent times. I remember a customer saying he'd bought the best, a tri. Nitron as he called it!.

Re: ID a Sony Trinitron?
The Trinitron was ahead of its time when launched and to me a good Sony CRT will give a more lifelike picture than any of the rubbish I repair now including Sony
I still have a 16 inch widescreen Sony a 14 and 21 inch Trinitron VCR combi as well as a fully working never been repaired KV1320 MK1

Re: ID a Sony Trinitron?
Did they ever make the Trinitron tube that used to appear in the official blurb? I never saw one if they did. The 'explanation' was of a single cathode gun feeding a beam splitter NOT the 3 cathode gun assemblies I saw in practice. The theoretical type would of course have required grid modulation and would have been a doddle to configure in the era of 'difference drive' but I never saw such a beast.

Re: ID a Sony Trinitron?
I put my Sony TV on Freecycle (the shame!) and did warn that it was heavy. But the lady that turned up was somewhat disbelieving until she tried to shift it (49 kg).

Re: ID a Sony Trinitron?
While there surely have been periods in time that a Trinitron tube gave the better picture, it was always being overtaken by the competition. Especially large screens and high resolutions have posed a continuous struggle for Sony to keep up with the competition.

Re: ID a Sony Trinitron?
I thought the main disadvantage of the early tubes was the front curvature was that of
a cylinder, thus limiting wider viewing angles. Agree on picture quality, had both KV1810mk2 and KV1822 from new which ran for years with no maintenance. The red phosphor was different to that used by Mullard. |
