Baird T164
Hi all,
I was lucky enough to win the titled set at the RWB special auction on Sunday and I am very pleased with it. I just have one small issue that I am hoping will be easy enough to fix once I know where to look as I have never had anything this old, the set works pretty well with its Mazda CRM92 "air bag" and the only faults I had were wobbly verticles - which I cured by adjusting the tuning slug in the chassis mounted coil, however the remaining fault is that I cannot resolve the sound, the tone from the Aurora is there but buried way down in the background of intercarrier buzz. I have not tried the set running off air content so wondered if it could be the testcard image itself that the set doesn't like? I have a much later Baird B&W dual standard set from the 60's that has a similar issue, if I listen to the radio on it through Freeview, the audio is masked by intercarrier buzz, if I press the green button on the remote to blank the screen content then the audio is fine, it is equally fine whilst watching off air content. What do others think before I take a look at this old set? Cheers

Re: Baird T164
I wonder if the oscillator is slightly off.

Re: Baird T164
Hi Stephen,
I'm not sure, the coil on the chassis is not quite visible in the pic but I have crudely pointed to it with a red arrow! I believe that is used to tune reception. Cheers

Re: Baird T164
I've not seen one of those for a very long time especially as clean as that. Is that the one that uses the mains lead as an aerial?

Re: Baird T164
This set looks like it could be "one of mine". It never used to do that and something may have shifted - or been twiddled. It does look like an alignment issue - hopefully simple to fix. Unfortunately I disposed of the manual along with all my paper service information during the great clear-out when I closed the business last year.
Your Aurora might even be set to the wrong channel. Try the adjacent channel. Steve

Re: Baird T164
Hi Peter,
Yes, it has a crude aerial selector in the form of two jumper links on the back that either connect the input circuits to the Ext. socket or the mains lead!! Hi Steve, I wonder if this used to be yours, how would we tell? Thanks for the pointer on the Aurora channel, I was presuming this was a channel 1 set. If I get some time tonight then I will certainly look into it and post back. Thanks! Cheers

Re: Baird T164
Oh wow! I will have a look at the tube tonight, did RACS use any markings at all to the tube so that I can find out?
Cheers

Re: Baird T164
They normally had a white paper label. Tube heater voltages and currents could differ from the original.

Hi Lee.
Well done on winning that set yesterday, it seems you have a fantastic specimen there. In addition the the above suggestions, have you tried an attenuator on the output of the Aurora yet? Good luck. Simon.

Re: Baird T164
Adjust the oscillator coil for maximum sound. The vision should then be correct. One side of the adjustment should give sound on vision, the other vision on sound.
If this does not tie up the IF strip probably requires alignment. John. |

Re: Baird T164
Hi John,
You were indeed right! The sound IF needed tweaking, must have slipped somehow in transit but cannot see how. Set now working perfectly and I am very happy with it. I was lucky enough to have a copy of the service manual sent to me from . G8KBG. Thanks Tone! Cheers

Re: Baird T164
Hi Stephen,
I have to admit that sealing the core crossed my mind and thought about a few drops of molten wax from some old sticky hunts caps that I have in the workshop bin, what do others think? Cheers

Re: Baird T164
Hi Lee
If the core is a loose fit then a couple of drops of wax would be a good idea. Well done on buying a nice little set and a worker as well. Robin |
