Default Ekco TMB272

The EKCO TMB272 portable television, which was released commercially in 1956, incorporated a three-band radio, is described everywhere I have searched online as having Band I, Band III, and Band II - in that order. Can anyone tell me why they are not in a 1-2-3 order? Is it because they are MW, LW and VHF for instance?
Can anyone advise me please?

Band I was used for BBC TV, Band III for ITA TV and Band II for VHF FM Radio.

The TMB272 incorporates a VHF/FM Band 2 radio. It is not a three waveband radio. The three positions on the tuner are for the old L [light programme] now Radio2. H [Home Service] now Radio4. T [The Third Programme[ Radio3.
All on VHF/FM as they are today.John

I think the "channels" are labelled 1 to 10 for TV and H, L, T, for Home, Light and Third.

Out of interest, I once owned a TMB272 that Gordon Bussey put me on to that was owned by Bud Flanagan, the set that he used in his personal changing room.

BTW, this is a vintage TV thread, not radio.

Thank you very much for clarifying it for me Graham, John, Lloyd and Steve. I wasn't sure which category to post it in because although a television/radio, it was the wavebands that were confusing me. 'Google' brings up some quite erroneous results. A smashing picture too, Lloyd

Can I guess a weight of 25 - 30 lbs for the TMB272?

If I had to guess the weight of a TMB272 I would say around 30lbs.

According to Radiomuseum 16.5 kg or 36 lb 5.5 oz

At this time no one wore seatbelts I doubt anyone worried about a loose TV

See here http://www.radiomuseum.org/r/ekco_tmb272tmb_27.html

Cheers

I understand the BBC used a few TBM272s in their outside broadcast units as monitors. I would also expect remote farms and dwelling without mains supply would be high on list of customers. A few may have been installed in "high end cars" but I would not expect them to be very successful.

Hi all,

I have a couple of Ekco TMB272's and one of them did indeed come from a remote farm just outside Northallerton. The guy we got it from did say his mum and dad bought the set new in the 1950's and ran it connected to batteries and a generator for years.
