What does it say on the maker's name plate? Any patent numbers?

Only a pure guess, maybe a base for an extension horn speaker.

Possibly the base containing the battery on which was mounted a portable electric bell for summoning help for someone bedridden.

Yes, I had one of these some years ago. The bell fits on top where the screw holes are and the terry clip is where the pear switch is stored.

This is a total guess : A portable bell.

A battery would have gone inside the box and made contact with the 2 metal strips. An electric bell or buzzer was originally screwed to the top of the box (where the holes are), the wiring would have been the 2 wire flex to one battery contact and one of the bell terminals with another wire (now missing) between the other battery contact and the other bell terminal. One of those wooden 'pear' push switches on the end of the flex. Then pushing the button on the 'pear' would ring the bell.

The pattern of holes on the box looks as though a normal bell push could have gone there (and a bell on the end of the flex) but I think that would have been less convenient to use so less likely.

As for use, perhaps so an ill person in bed could attract attention?
