Sanyo VTC 9455 and VTC R4ME VCRs
Hello. Has anyone ever come across these multi-standard Betamax machines? They must be very rare models for the middle east market only. Both of them handle PAL, SECAM and NTSC. I don't know many info about the 9455. The R4 seems to have the same mechanism as the VTC 5000 so I'm guessing it is from 1982 or 83. Does anyone know anything about these machines? Thanks.

Hi Fivos
Wow I think you've come across some rare Sanyo's there my friend. I have never heard of them and only thought Sony did the multi standard domestic machines. Interesting you say for the middle east market. I wonder if anyone can shed any light on these. Thanks for the post, Kevin |

Re: Sanyo VTC 9455 and VTC R4ME VCRs
I have two middle eastern Sanyo machines. A VTC 9350 and a VTC 5350. The 9350 is the PAL/SECAM version of the 9300 and the 5350 is the PAL/SECAM version of the 5300. Both of them with golden and woodgrain finish. Also, the VTC 5000 had a PAL/SECAM version, the VTC 5550. These machines are very rare but some of them were sold in Greece in the early 80s. Also, look what I found on the PALsite chat page. A guy got one back in 2003. Wow!

I really want one. I don't know how it found its way to the UK! The price in Greece was 144.000 drachmas back in November of 1982 which equals to 335 British pounds.

Here's a new find! Sanyo VTC 9450. This is an exact clone of Sony's SL-T7ME multi system machine! So now we are counting three multi system Sanyo machines. More to come I hope...

Re: Sanyo VTC 9455 and VTC R4ME VCRs
Hi Fiivos:
It looks just like the Sony C5 a huge bulky looking beast. It seems in some countries they badge engineered Beta products like Sanyo did with Sony's Betamovie. Interesting too in that Australia got the BMC500p but the UK never got this model from Sanyo only Sony. I've also seen a Super Beta model, obviously designed by Sony, with a later style Sanyo badge on it for the NTSC market.I have a picture I saved somewhere. Also the VTC M50 was only for the Aussie and New Zealand markets despite being PAL. The Same with the Sanyo VCR7250 Superbeta Hi-Fi model. Only for the NTSC markets. They must have had some discussion here and decided to throw in the towel with Beta in 1986 and release VHS models here too (which they did). I know that they were flouting having Beta and VHS models at the same time and Beta 'would continue' but it didn't take an expert to realise Beta's days were numbered with them. The same as Sony, releasing all those High end multi faceted Super beta and ED beta models for Japan and America and giving the UK that horrible cheap looking basic SLF25 number. It even made Sanyo's basement models look high tech. Kev |

Sanyo also did a clone of the portable SL-3000, the VTC 3000P. The Sanyo Super Beta with the newer style Sanyo logo is the model VCR 8700 and looks like the Sony SL-300.

That later one you mention is more than likely the one a saw.

This one also looks like it has the Sony 711 chassis and looks a bit like the SL-F30/60.

Actually looking at that model it looks to have the clock control panel design straight from the M50,in that it folds down and out like Sonys C20/30/40 models. It also shares the slimmer design they created with the 7250 NTSC SuperBeta Hi-Fi model so could very well be their own work. It was more than likely made around 1985/6. What market was that for? Also looking at those tape control buttons you can clearly see the classic signs of that machine spending a lot of it's time in a heavy smoking environment....YUK!!!!! Cheers for the pictures, Kev |

Re: Sanyo VTC 9455 and VTC R4ME VCRs
It might not even be a clone, but a full on OEM (=badge engineered) model made by Sony as it would likely be too much trouble for Sanyo to adopt their own production lines to a model with a different construction.

Re: Sanyo VTC 9455 and VTC R4ME VCRs
Also Sanyo still had their old logo on it which wasn't changed until 1987, so I feel sure it was their own design.
Besides changing out rubber belt's and idlers (with the other areas seen to as well) is a lot easier than trying to repair/replace tiny broken plastic gears and sort out failed hall sensors ,transistors that commonly plague Sony's models. Still nice to see these rare models. ..................Kev |

Re: Sanyo VTC 9455 and VTC R4ME VCRs
Fivos;
The 5250 model for South Africa, I remember seeing that picture used to advertise this new model in a UK magazine ,the VTC 5150. I remember it as it has that black area around the control keys. Also note it's missing the 'reverse play' feature. Which I believe was only given on the UK model (which is nice). Those other two seemed to be based on the VTC 53/400 models. Thanks for sharing...................Kev |

Re: Sanyo VTC 9455 and VTC R4ME VCRs
Kevin,
There is also a black version of the 5150, the 5150 MK3. I have seen a couple of these on eBay. It looks like the 5250 but it has the reverse play feature. I actually have a 5350. It is just like the 5300 but with PAL and SECAM and slightly different design as you can see from the picture. I think the 5330 is an Australian model. The 5350 was for the Middle East. It's also very unusual to see a VCR clock with AM and PM on it .....

Re: Sanyo VTC 9455 and VTC R4ME VCRs
Yes
I did just that on a Australian M40 (UK ones were hard to come by around 2003), that had AM-PM. There was a diode you added or removed (sorry it was awhile ago). If you look on the front panels (or the back of them) and the circuit boards you can see the spaces for the different version/options for different countries. I also wasn't aware of those other models. I have seen some of the numbers mentioned when going on spares sites that list the options the parts are for. I actually like the black panels for the NX30 (identical it seems to the UK's M30). Cheers again.......................Kev |
