Christmas holiday TV testing
Hi All,
Having got married last year I have since not had much time to visit my parents' place (where most of my TV sets still are) and power up my old sets. This year I had a quick go at powering them up. Here are the results:- 6" 1938 Cossor 54. Overhauled 6+ yrs ago, last used 3 yrs ago. Worked as well as it did (I never had it working perfectly), no new faults. 9" 1949 Invicta T102. That's a good result! Those little Ekco TMB272's are brilliant sets, I waited 9 years to get mine going. It's by far the best 405 line telly I've got. All my sets are in storage at the moment, so no firing them up for a while.

Re: Christmas holiday TV testing
Hi Lloyd,
It was a good result yes, but dissapointing in places. The reason being that the KB KV35 was restored not that long ago and was capable of really good pictures, though maybe it is just a poor contact on an RF valve. The Invicta T102 was re-restored not long ago, that is I took one of my earliest restorations and did it again, this time using period components (including oil caps that were re-stuffed). It is worrying that there is no EHT, though there is some 10KHz whistle (In this set there are two 10KHz output stages fed from the same oscillator, one for the line scan and one for the EHT). It is also not long since I had last tried the set and seen it working. The Sony had undergone complete replacement of the electrolytics including the hard to get to resivoir caps. The squegging fault then showed itself and was cured by replacing the rectifier diodes in the PSU section, so why has the fault returned? But yes the TMB272 was a pleasant supprise Cheers Andy

Re: Christmas holiday TV testing
We had a TMB272 in our caravan on our honeymoon at Tavistock in 1963, you need a very big battery to run it from your car and still be able to start it in the morning!

Re: Christmas holiday TV testing
Not a bad result, I dug out my 1960 Pye V200 only to find the picture to be weak and lacking sync, it was fine a couple of years ago
My Bush TV22 had also not been powered up for at least two years, but worked perfectly all evening. I have well over 50 sets, some have not been powered up for five years, so I am expecting to have a few issues when I drag them out. The most amazing set was an unrestored Pye LV20 which had not been used since 1960, it powered up fine with a decent picture after sitting in a loft for fifty years! I too am not surprised that the TMB272 fired up fine, my unrestored set still performs well despite all it's old leaky caps, even the radio is still working. Mark |

Re: Christmas holiday TV testing
Hi Maria,
No not your set, That is a B18T. The LV20 is the newer model It should be making it to the bench in the next couple of months once I have finished my TV22 restoration. I really must make it my new years resolution to power up and use my sets on a more regular basis Trouble is there is so many of them... Mark |
