GEC BT2253 television - UK Vintage Radio Repair and Restoration Discussion Forum

Hey everyone, please excuse my ignorance with all things vintage when it comes to television sets. But I found this in the loft space of my new house and have no idea if it's worth anything to anyone. I have no idea if it works but looks to be in good condition. I can get it down and try it if people are interested.

Whatever you do, do not plug it into the mains to try, as it will certainly damage it and it may seriously overheat!

Most vintage TV enthusiasts would want such a set to restore themselves, so I would offer it for sale as it is.

Thank you for your advice I would most certainly plugged it in. How much do you think it might be worth to some one who would like to restore it?

A picture of the back or insides would help to judge the condition, if it is complete and undamaged it would be worth more than one with a broken tube. It dates from around 1957 so not hugely valuable, I would think £10-30 depending on condition.

The BT2253 is a 17" CRT model, the CRT is the GEC 7404A which is really the Mazda CRM172. This tube has the 35mm neck.
The cabinet has the look of Bakelite. Is it of that material or wood?
Excellent sets and easy to get working.
Information for the BT2253 can be found in the 1957/58 R & T servicing book.

One of my vintage favourites. Not worth a lot but great fun to restore from an enthusiasts point of view. As David says, easy to work on and gives a great picture.
The CRM172 picture tube seems to survive better than most. John.
