Default Sony CCD 35E camcorder

Can any one tell me where I can find out more of this item? There is no charger with it so cannot charge battery or open the cassette door. Anyone own one?

Look out in charity shops and car boots, as they're full of machines of this vintage and chargers for them too.

You could probably charge the battery (to some extent) with a variable power supply and series resistance to test the unit's basic functionality. Or apply a DC voltage to the prongs where the NiCd battery attaches.

I don't have any experience with this particular model but if you remove the battery pack is there a socket for an external D.C. supply?

I suspect that it needs a 2 amp supply to work.

I have a similar model. The charger/power supply is designed so that one side can latch on to the camcorder and power it directly, whilst the other side latches on to a battery to charge it. There's a slide switch which can be set to DC out or charge.

The batteries are 6V and have POS and NEG connections to the back of the camcorder.

There is no facility to power the camcorder via a plug and socket.

I'm afraid the SM tants in these camcorders go leaky and they're extremely difficult to replace.

How right you are. I had a JVC camcorder I purchased in 1990. I used it a lot for a while then packed it away safely when I moved.
When unpacking I could detect a strong vinegar smell and upon investigation discovered most of the tants had leaked destroying all the P/C boards. I dropped it in the bin!
It cost a fortune but was replaced with a tiny Digital Toshiba camileo HD for less than £90 that did everything 1000% better!
Worth having a quick look before going to a lot of trouble. Technology marches forward and sometimes it is a definate improvement! . John.

I've seen a few Camcorders at car-boots, and I understand the tant problem as described here. However I don't know the answer to the question - do the tants go leaky through non-use, or is it like paper capacitors just going off with age?

Can folk advise please?

Tants? I thought it was SM electrolytics.

The Sony power unit is AC-V30. Many camcorders get dumped because the cassette
is trapped and can't be ejected or the door stays closed or partially closed. With skill
it is possible to rescue the tape with minimal damage.

You're probably right.

My camcorder plays back OK, but shuts down as soon as it's set to record mode. Recommended repair method is to change all the caps. However one look at the service manual showed me that I'd no hope at all of doing that.

I'd be interested to know more about opening the door to release the tape.

Can you not just connect an external power supply to the battery contacts?

I connected a 6V battery to the contacts and just got a ticking noise! There is a socket marked 'RFU' ( Remote function unit?) but no obvious voltage inputs.

Or possibly Radio Frequency unit. ie modulator for TV

ISTR my CCD V50E had something similar.

The CCD V50E the mains unit was shaped like the battery and fitted in the same place.

The battery's fitted into an adaptor for charging

Cheers

There is no separate input for external power. The external PSU locks on to the camcorder just like a battery.

Was the supply able to deliver enough current to power the camcorder? Polarity correct?

Did you try setting the rotary switch to "player" and checking whether the FF, RW and Forward functions worked (this assumes there's a cassette in the camcorder).

The cassette is ejected by depressing the lock button on the eject control and sliding it downwards.

Red face Re: Sony CCD 35E camcorder

I don't have a cassette for it but will try again to open .I suspect the battery was not good enough to operate anything except the clock.
