Ok, have done some more digging around,

Have come across a bridge wire that wasn't done during my ownership from the leg of c22 to fuse f1102 (bypassing it by the looks of things)

Ic3 has beeen replaced or tampered with.

The solder points suggest c25 has been replaced, soldering is poor.

And of course d16 is still out of circuit (don't have a replacement)

The only thing we did yesterday was take d16 out.

Is it worth my while continuing given the above?

Removed c22, which didn't take much effort, pretty safe to say it's spewed its guts out.

Best get rid of that bridge wire while I'm at it.

Replaced c22 with a 20v cap as that's all I have handy. removed the bridge wire and connected back up to machine. Again as before the heads spun for a couple of seconds and then the machine went off. Psu gave a kind of creaking noise rather than the usual chirp sound.

The tracks aren't liking the heat from the solder and I fear if I continue further il damage them.

I still think you need to do a wholesale capacitor change. I might be wrong, but it's possible that link wire is original - it's certainly the colour wire they used for factory modifications.
With a good temperature controlled iron and care I don't think you'll damage the tracks. After all it doesn't work now anyway! Whatever you do, don't connect it to your machine with the diode disconnected or you can do untold damage if the rail's a bit high.

De soldering braid of good quality every time to avoid track damage.Very often apart from most of those caps will be duff,an iron underneath (on the joints) show them up by an ominous sizzle when they are leaking.
