Ouch! considering that is the EEPROM! according to the manual in above link thanks to Fivos , it is virtually certain that the machine is pretty much a write-off, there must be a VERY serious overvolt condition in the PSU !

That's just what I thought when I saw that photo! Lightning damage?
VCRs of that last generation generally aren't worth repairing, and certainly not after having suffered that kind of damage.

Hi ben,
the feed for the syscon is fed directly off the PSU before the fixed regulators, the regulation for that part being carried out by the psu itself by the looks of it, it looks like an over volt condition, either way the machine will most likely be a total write off.

Perhaps there is a translation difficulty here, I have nvm's fail but I have never seen one blown. This uses a chassis similar to the uk 888 range, I used to refurb 80 a day and had nvm failure but none were blown. All could be re-written to.

No translation problem in this case Tony The top of the eeprom has a hole blown out in the photo , to do that it will have almost certainly blown the μprocessor as well as anything else connected to that supply line.

To be honest I am a bit surprised that there is not more damage visible in the photograph.

I know where you were coming from with the phrase "blown eeprom" though

As ben said, these newer 2000ish VCRs aren't very much worth repairing. Well-made VCRs were those built until the early 90s. My newest VCR is Panasonic FS200 G-deck from 1992 and I simply love this machine!

Perhaps the reason for attempting to repair the VCR is its multi-standard capabilities?

I was told that multi-standard VCRs abounded at one time in the countries bordering the Arabian Gulf.

It is a waste of time and money finding and replacing that eeprom IC (which presumably is preprogrammed to that model/series of VCR) until you have discovered and solved what caused its demise. And checked the rest of the machine is undamaged (which is unlikely).

Before you go any further, Remove the main board and look at the processor and the print on the board itself, you may well find some burn marks around the processor and other parts of the board.

As others have said, with this kiund of damage, its virtually unrepairable and certainly uneconomic.
