Default Pre-war set at Science Museum

This attractive set was snapped by a friend recently visiting the Science Museum. What is it?

A Pye 843 perhaps?

That's a really rare one. It's a Pye and is similar in some respects to the model 4046. The display set has the added refinement of a radio receiver.

I have the PYE 835 radio which uses the same radio control panel with push buttons and a strange little tone switch on the left hand side, I assume this TV set uses the same radio chassis ? my set is dated 1937

I thought the pre war sets had their CRT's vertically mounted because of the very small deflection angle.

Vertical tube/mirror lid was often the case for 12" and above, particularly for the models introduced in 1936/7. But 9-inch (as here?) and smaller could be direct view and just have very deep cabinets.

Could it be an Invicta TL2 ??
(I don't know how those Invictas look - at least Pye-ish.)

Steve, you are correct that this is a Pye 843 of 1938. I talked to Gordon Bussey about the set many years ago as he restored the set in 1986. Sadly he's no longer with us to comment further about the restoration. I've also spoke to John Trenouth about it too when the set was in storage at Wroughton. It is the only known example as like my 4046 of 1937 that David has mentioned.

From the Early Television Foundation website: Pictures of the Pye 843 and the 4046 along with many other pre-war Pye TVs.

Cossor made a 15" set before the war with a conventionally mounted tube, it had a scarily long neck projecting from the rear. This also had a built in radio with a 7 metre band on which you tuned in the sound. We scrapped a few of those in the '50s - I wish we hadn't!

It looks identical to the one in column one, row three of this page:
