Re: My Christmas present - Bush TV22
Hi Andy, Yes the picture is very good, once the RF deck is finished and the valve pins and holders have been cleaned it should be a cracking set.
I have run it over an hour, and the EHT is rock steady. The LOPT is barely warm. It will be interesting to run it side by side with my MK1 TV22, that too has an excellent picture. I have left the hum cancellation cap out of circuit on both sets, it does not seem to have any effect on the set other than lower the power consumption with it out of circuit Mark |

Re: My Christmas present - Bush TV22
Excellent result Mark, I wish I'd have had your luck with my 22/24 sets.
Looking forward to seeing photo's of the set fully boxed up and no doubt gleaming. Marc. |

Re: My Christmas present - Bush TV22
A great looking picture, Mark. Well done on an interesting restoration. I sold my 2 TV22s as they are a bit young for me but I kept the TV12.

Re: My Christmas present - Bush TV22
Re the hum cancellation cap:
It reduces the ripple on the HT line from about 0.7v rms to about 0.15 rms. The set will work fine without it, but you can see the picture expand and contract slightly as the Aurora generated 50Hz beats gently with the mains 50Hz. With it in circuit this effect becomes virtually invisible. However given the amount that the picture size varies anyway with scene brightness it's not essential. If you do replace it ensure adequate voltage rating. It has ~185vdc on one side and ~200vac rms on the other. so must be able to tolerate (200*1.4) + 185 = 465vdc. Which is the worst case during a negative AC cycle. Regards, Paul |

Re: My Christmas present - Bush TV22
Well done with getting the set looking so good Mark. How about a picture of it all boxed up?

I really love the look of these sets, and the fact they don't take up much room I have a rather sad example of a TV32, but to my mind the cabinet is rather ugly compared to the smaller sets. Quote:
The cabinet has been stripped and cleaned both internally and externally, as have the mask and safety glass. I have got most of the cabinet polished with T-cut, and it looks gorgeous I now have to tackle the fluted areas to the sides and the speaker slats, this is very tedious using cotton buds to get in to the corners. But it really makes a difference to the final appearance, my other TV22 still looks as good as when I completed it over two years ago. Mark |

Re: My Christmas present - Bush TV22
I have now finished the cabinet, it certainly looks a lot better for the effort it took, I am very pleased with the way the internal foil screening has turned out.
It was absolutely black when I started, but the muck soon gave in when attacked with Flash kitchen spray, the grime just dripped of it in dark brown pools. The back was already in good condition, but looks better for a good clean. The silver lettering is now nice and bright. I will box up the set this evening and give it a run for a couple of hours. Go on - admit it - you've bought a brand new TV22 and are fooling us!
Great job. |

Re: My Christmas present - Bush TV22
The set was reassembled and the picture set up to fill the mask nicely.
It ran fine for half an hour, then I looked up to see the picture had disappeared. The PL38 had it's usual blue glow, but the EY51 was not lit. Further investigation showed only the smallest of sparks from the overwind connection and a lack of line whistle, looks like the LOPT has shuffled off it's mortal coil I will whip it out for a post mortem, but suspect an open primary winding... Re: My Christmas present - Bush TV22
I have removed the LOPT and done some resistance checks, it all seems to be in the ballpark. But I had the same results with the LOPT from my TV24.
It's failure was quite sudden, no symptoms of imminent failure were observed. I guess that is just the way thing go when bringing these old sets back to life The base of the LOPT shows the lams to be in good condition, but there is some rust and spreading of the lams on the top. The TV24 LOPT is the opposite. I guess both have shorted turns on the primary? I will have to get it rewound, I suspect the lams can be cleaned up. Mark |
